Betty Arends Obituary

Betty Jeanne Patnoe Arends This lovely lady passed away peacefully at her home in Grass Valley California on April 9, 2005, with family and friends by her side. She was born in San Francisco at St. Luke Hospital on November 7, 1924, daughter of Adrienne Ann Cesmat Patnoe and Theodore Frank Patnoe. She lived in San Francisco until she was 16, when their family moved to San Jose. She attended San Jose High School, graduating in June 1942, and subsequently attended San Jose State University, graduating in February, 1949.

While attending SJSU, as editor of the "La Torre" yearbook, Betty had an argument/stand off with the Student Body President, Emerson "Doc" Arends. They married August 22, 1948. "Doc" went on to own and operate the Campbell Lumber Company, and served as president of the Campbell-Union High District School Board and was active with the Rotary Club.

They had a wonderful life together for 47 years traveling around the world with family and friends, always finding beaches a place to play and rest. Always the gracious hostess, their annual Arends' Polynesian Pupu Palace party was shared with all their wonderful friends. Never being far from one another, Emerson "Doc" always referred to her as his beautiful bride.

Residing in Campbell, Calif., they had three children: Susan Anne Arends (12/51-3/52) Harry Douglas Arends (6/52-) Emily Jayne Arends (6/54-) And two grandchildren: Lauren Hall (3/81-) Alisha Hall (6/84-).

Betty was also actively involved in the Cambrian School Home and School Club, The Children's Home Society, The San Jose State alumnus group "The Black Masque Society," the local Delta Beta Sigma and the National Alpha Omicron Pi. Betty and Doc (the love of her life) built their house of their dreams in Grass Valley, California and moved there in 1989. A home and the yard around it filled with many loving reminders of all their travels, family and friends. She will be dearly missed.

No services will be held, at her request. Her ashes will be scattered where her husband's were, in the ocean off the coast of Hawaii near Diamond Head, a spot she always loved. Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to: The Hospice of the Foothills, 12399 Nevada City Highway Grass Valley, Calif., 95945 (530) 272-5739.

Harry & Emily,

I was so saddened to learn of your mother's passing. She was such a vivacious person and always so kind to me. We were very fortunate to have your family as neighbors all those years in Campbell. I loved going through our shared gate and taking care of your parent's yard when they were gone. Both of your parents impacted my childhood. My thoughts are with your family.

Dear Harry, "Doc", Susan, and Emily,

The year was 1969, the year that I first met you, Harry, in the Model A Ford Club. It was the summer of ' 71 when you invited me to your home in Campbell for dinner with your family that I then met all of you. I would come to your home on other occasions too, and even be invited to festive gatherings at your home in Aptos. Those were times that I have never yet forgotten... and do believe, seasons of time that I will never ever forget as well. Each of you were so special to me, and what a wonderful family you are... and have been remembered as... all these many years. And what a special...warm and gracious, loving and kind lady I remember Betty to be. I will always remember her dear and sweet heart. What a gift of hospitality she possessed and shared towards me... and WOW, did I ever enjoy her cooking. What a long and lasting impression Betty made upon me. I can only imagine the impact that Betty and each of you collectively have made upon the lives of others as well. What a legacy. I am rich and blessed because my life was fortunate to have crossed with hers (and yours) in this life… even if for just moments. Thanks for the fond memories. Please know that I am so very sorry for your loss of Betty, and have already begun lifting each of you up in prayer. May the Lord Jesus Christ bless you, and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance on you, and give you peace. And know always, that the Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit. With deepest sympathy, a friend from long long ago, Craig Curtis
