SWORDS CREEK, Va. — Bernard Ralph Hill, age 85, of Swords Creek, Va., was at home surrounded by his loving family as he passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 following a brief illness.
He was born in Russell County, Va. and was the son of the late John R. and Dixie Dye Hill, former Russell County natives. Ralph had served his country proudly in the Army during World War II. He was a retired coal miner for Pittston Coal Company, and a member of the UMWA Local #7327 of Jewell Valley, Va., was of the Pentecostal faith and was a lifetime resident of the Swords Creek area. Ralph was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and a great-great-grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Gibson, Zola Martin; and one brother, Claude Hill.
Those who remain to carry on his spirit are his loving wife, Mildred Cline Hill of Swords Creek, Va.; daughters, Sandra Griffith and husband, Bob of Rosedale, Va., Donna Gail Hill of Swords Creek, Va., Rebecca Ratliff and husband Doug of Swords Creek, Va., Janet Lankford and husband Dennis of Swords Creek, Va.; son, Ronnie Hill and wife Teresa Mae of Swords Creek, Va.; sisters, Beryl Dye and husband Kenneth of Swords Creek, Va., Geneva Skeens of Lebanon, Va.; grandchildren, Scott Griffith, Denise Watson, Ritchie Hill and Rhonda Musick; great-grandchildren, Tara White, Shanna Ratliff, Christian Smith and Bambi; great-great-grandchildren, Tori White and Sandra Lee Watson.
Funeral services for Bernard Ralph Hill will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va. with the Reverend Dennis White officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be John Reedy, Robert Miller, Rick Hill, Harry Whitt, Melvin Dowdy and David Dye. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy and Troy Horton and Glen Griffith. Friends may call on Friday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va.
