Bernard Grant Obituary

Grant, Bernard J. "Red" 82, of Chicago, died peacefully in the presence of his loving family on July 23, 2013. Devoted husband for 56 years to the late Georgia; loving father and friend to Mark (Helene); cherished and generous grandfather to Kelly and Allison. Bernie was the last of a generation of Grants raised on North Sawyer Avenue. A man of great Catholic faith, he was the beloved son of Peter (County Armagh) and Nellie (County Mayo), who he will now join in blessed eternal rest. He was also the dearest baby brother of his brothers and sisters who have predeceased him, Elizabeth (Henry) Lane, Peter (Ruth) Grant, John (Anne) Grant, Martin (Margaret) Grant, Anthony (Mary) Grant, Helen (Albin) Dergance, and Thomas Grant. "Uncle Ber" to many adoring nieces and nephews, a friend to all who knew him, he will remain forever in our hearts. Mr. Grant was a 1949 graduate of Lane Technical High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. He married Georgia on June 18, 1955 and together lived their entire lives on the north side of Chicago's Logan Square and Jefferson Park neighborhoods. He worked as an accountant for Oscar Meyer and as a switchman for the Milwaukee Road, later the Canadian Pacific. A lifelong and proud fan of the Chicago Bears and University of Notre Dame football teams, he was also a long suffering and disappointed Cubs fan, being in attendance at game 6 in the 2003 NLCS particularly comes to mind. Along with his brother Tony, he created the annual Grant Family Open Golf Tournament, now approaching its 40th tee time. Bernie played the ponies for entertainment yet was a staid, deliberate long term investor in the stock market, with a keen eye for winners in both financial marketplaces. A special thank you to John, Matt and all the others of the morning breakfast club and to all who cared for him at Resurrection Hospital, Resurrection Rehabilitation, and Lutheran General Hospital. Visitation Friday 3:00-9:00 PM at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave. Chicago. Funeral services Saturday 9:30 AM from Smith-Corcoran for 10 AM Mass at St. Cornelius 5430 W. Foster Ave. Chicago. Interment Mt. Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to 8th Day Center for Justice, 205 W. Monroe, Chicago, IL 60606 or American Heart Association, 208 S LaSalle St Ste 1500, Chicago, IL 60604 would be greatly appreciated. Mark & Helene,

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Bernie. He was always so much fun to be around. I will always remember his quick smile, his fabulous laugh and his love of a good story, whether he was telling it or listening to it. No trip to Chicago was complete without a least a quick visit with him. He was really one of a kind. My deepest sympathies to both of you as well as your girls.
