Benjamin Schulman Obituary

Schulman, Benjamin S. was born in Gary, IN on April 1, 1940. He has also lived in Michigan City, IN and Chicago, IL. Benjamin graduated from Indiana University. Benjamin passed away on December 30, 2006 in Scottsdale, AZ. He is survived by his brother Jules and his two sons Charlie and Jim. In 1966, Mr. Schulman, as the managing partner, founded Burger Management, Inc., a Burger King franchise company which operated Burger King restaurants in Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Michigan and Michigan City, Indiana. These restaurants were some of the first Burger King restaurants ever developed in the Country. The company that Mr. Schulman founded was the forerunner of Quality Dining, Inc., which is one of the largest privately-owned franchised restaurant companies in the Country today. Today, Quality Dining operates 122 Burger King restaurants, 41 Chili's Grill & Bar restaurants, 7 Papa Vino's restaurants, three Spageddie's restaurants, and one Porterhouse steakhouse restaurant in six states. Mr. Schulman was well recognized and honored throughout the Burger King Franchise Community as a leading Franchisee operator and, although inactive in the business over the last several years, will long be remembered as a pioneer of Burger King restaurants in Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan. There will be graveside service held directly at Beth-El Cemetery in Portage, IN, on the corner of Central and Willow at 11 a.m. Friday, January 5th, 2007, with Rabbi Stanley Halpen officiating.
