To the Lankford Family,
Your family is my family, your sister is my sister. My deepest and sincerest sympathies as we share our physical loss. But the memories of those we love and cherish are with us always. God loaned her to us for a reason and a season. The better we understand the reason, the better we understand the end of the season.

Dear Family.
Expressing my deepest sympathy and condolences, I couldn’t bear to visit Audrey, but God knows my heart. All week Patti’s LaBelle’s song (You are my Friend) has been in my head, so my daughter suggested I write a letter.

A Letter to Big Sister Audrey

I remember leaving Judd Elementary School, jumping in your car after school to pick up Sean from pre-school. I would watch you --walking swiftly in your high heel shoes with the authority of a model on a runway. You were always a sharp dresser. Sean (3 years old)would jump in with his latest art project and I would immediately begin to tease him, “What is that?” I would inquire sarcastically. I was 22 years old.
All the conversations we had in your kitchen, first just you, Bill, and I. Then Paulette joined the kitchen meetings, as well as other women. We were always in your kitchen. That was the place to drop your brief case, kick off your shoes, and confab with our mentor, our role model—Audrey. Most of the time we didn’t even telephone! We just dropped in. You never complained and welcomed us. You were Bill’s wife, Sean and Rodney’s mom, and an educator,—but you always opened your house to us. It never occurred to us ---as you put in a load of laundry and checked your loaves of bread that you were baking ----that you were busy. Now that I’m a mom, I can barely manage one child, work, and maintain a house. I believe I speak for all the women that graced your kitchen, “We glory in your spunk. You were indeed a super woman.” You contributed to our spiritual growth, strength, and gave us the courage to move forward in all of our endeavors. When the women of the kitchen meet on the street, we reminisce to “the good old days in Audrey’s kitchen.” Then we exchange information regarding the last time we spoke to you.
There is no doubt in my mind, this tradition will continue.
Audrey you were our advisor—on any subject matter, when we needed it. When I escaped from Africa and finally realized I was in New York, Audrey you were the first person I telephoned, Only Audrey and Bill know the real deal..
As I told you on the telephone, I sincerely love you. I value our friendship. Now that I’m fifty-two, I can truthfully say you have been closer than my sisters. You will be missed and no one will ever fill the void. Everything is working in divine order. See you on the other side.
