I am not resigned.



My dear old friend A.P. was a good man. He loved his mom, his dogs, his work -- a combination of blessings and blessedness that's granted to few, I'm afraid.



For several months, A.P. and I had been trying to put together a week of golfing out here in California this fall. We had never played together, and I was so looking forward to doing so. I don't think I've ever laughed as much, or harder, with anyone, every time we were together. I will miss him.



I am listening to Jackson Browne a lot this week -- songs A.P. and I and other friends loved together, songs that now speak with renewed poignancy about love and death, youth and hope and time and loss.



I regret that I cannot attend the service. If I could have, I might have wished to speak of consolation and hope, but I could not have done so. This poem, by Edna St. Vincent Millay, reflects my feelings.



I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground.

So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind:

Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely. Crowned

With lilies and with laurel they go; but I am not resigned.



Lovers and thinkers, into the earth with you.

Be one with the dull, the indiscriminate dust.

A fragment of what you felt, of what you knew,

A formula, a phrase remains, Ñ but the best is lost.



The answers quick and keen, the honest look, the laughter, the love, Ñ

They are gone. They have gone to feed the roses. Elegant and curled

Tim will truly be missed. I worked with him as his Assistant for the past 3 1/2 years until my departure from LaSalle in August. Tim was a very easy person to work with. Condolescenes to all who will be effected by his absence.
