ANN MCCARTHY Obituary

Ann M. McCarthy Dedicated nurse began her career working in a Panamanian leper colony, 84 Ann M. McCarthy, 84, died peacefully at Morristown Medical Center on Jan. 11, 2017. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today, Monday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bernardsville, N.J. Friends may visit on Monday, Jan. 16, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Gallaway and Crane Funeral Home, 101 South Finley Ave., Basking Ridge, N.J. 07920. Ann was born on Aug. 7, 1932, in Bernardsdville, N.J., the daughter of Samuel H. and Marie L. Barratt. She graduated from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Hoboken, N.J., and St. Joseph's College in Standish, Maine. Ann had a very rewarding nursing career starting in Panama, where she worked with the Maryknoll nuns in a leper colony. She trained in intensive and cardiac care nursing in 1957 in Georgia. She co-authored a book on nursing skills while in Colorado. Ann worked in the intensive and cardiac care units at Morristown Medical Center in the 1970's and then obtained her certification in rehabilitation nursing. She ended her career in 1999 as a rehabilitation nurse at the Rehabilitation Institute of Morristown Medical Center, currently known as Atlantic Rehabilitation Insitute. She married the love of her life, Captain Robert T. McCarthy, in May of 1952. Through his military career, they lived happily in many different places in the world, including Panama and Japan. Ann was an avid collector of U.S. history-related documents and U.S. paper currency. She always enjoyed helping others and spent a great deal of time volunteering with the elderly. She was known for her service and generosity to others. Ann was also a devout Catholic and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bernardsville, N.J. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert T. McCarthy; her brother, Samuel W. Barratt; her sisters, Rosemary (Barratt) Choyce and Margaret Mary (Peggy Barratt) McCabe, and her cousin, Rita Cooper. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and their families. In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to The Center for Great Expectations, 19B Dellwood Ln., Somerville, N.J. 08873.
