Andrew Lock Obituary

Lock, Andrew age 52, passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Andrew was born on November 15, 1955 in Kankakee, Illinois to Thomas and Delores (Clair) Lock. Andy attended Kankakee Community College and Governor's State University. Seemingly right out of school Andy dove head first into video production. Filling in for a sick employee, Andy landed his first assignment covering a tennis match for a local cable channel. Impressed with his hard work and skills, he was asked back frequently eventually landing a full time job with MetroVision Cable. There he began making connections and was asked to produce a project on the last year of Old Comiskey Park. Once again impressed with the talent Andy possessed, a regular fulltime position was offered and accepted but Andy wanted more. He established AndyCam Video Productions for his freelance interests while simultaneously working on projects for the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bears, the Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago Blackhawks. His work has taken him through Canada and Mexico and all across the United States. From covering the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago to traveling with the Chicago Bulls during the last year of Michael Jordan's time with the team, Andy Lock has seen an experienced more than one could imagine. However, aside from the sports and the lights and the glamour, a passion and respect for community, family and home is what lead Andy to his legacies; The Easter Seals Foundation Telethon. For the last 20 years Andy has independently produced a 10 hour live telethon in the Kankakee area raising countless dollars for the important work The Easter Seals conducts with mentally and physically handicapped children and their families. Undoubtedly, the foundation of compassion Andy has laid will continue to be built upon for year to come. ASM (After School Matters) is a community based program in Chicago that offered mentorship to teenagers who had an interest in audio/visual work but perhaps not the means to pursue it. His guidance spread across the city and many former students still to this day work in the field and for AndyCam Video Productions. The Illinois Freedom Run, an annual motorcycle ride in the Kankakee area, brings attention and tribute to the men and women in the Middle East conflicts; an event otherwise not covered in the media, Andy made it a priority to bring this function into the spotlight. Even closer to his hometown of Kankakee, Andy worked on many public service announcements for the local fire, police, and hospital programs. A commitment to community is what inspired home to create a special series showcasing the Chicago Bears Training Camp. As a tribute to his roots, he also highlighted the Kankakee River Valley. His contributions to his family, friends, profession, passions and community are what makes Andrew Lock a philanthropist of the highest and truest order. He married Karen Arndt on September 29, 2006 in Orland Park, Illinois. Andy is survived by his wife, Karen; his parents, Thomas and Delores of Kankakee, Illinois; his sister, Susan (Patricia Iler) Lock of Kankakee, Illinois, one step-daughter, Stacia Arndt of Chicago Ridge, Illinois; two step-sons, Ryan Arndt of Chicago Ridge, Illinois and Kevin Arndt of Wheaton, Illinois; one grandson, Tyler Arndt-Uribe; his father-in-law, Jay Smith of Rosco, Illinois; two brothers-in-law, Blake (Stacey) Smith of Downers Grove, Illinois and Brad (Kathy) Smith also of Downers Grove, Illinois; one sister-in-law, Valerie (Gene) Wedoe of Lakeville, Minnesota; five nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Rosemary Smith. Visitation will be held Monday, August 25, 2008 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Kankakee Chapel of the Schreffler Funeral Home and on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 from 10:00 to -11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ in Kankakee. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ with the burial on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at Clarendon Hills Cemetery in Darien, Illinois. Karen,
I had the chance to meet Andy several times as my boyfriend Dave Iem had worked with him in the past. He had the warmest smile and a zest for life! We were shocked and still saddened with the news. Dave and I are so sorry for your loss and our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I just heard the news of Andy's untimely death. Shocked is not a big enough word. I met Andy back in the early 80s when he worked at Cablevision with Greg and Pam. I've watched his career from that point forward with great pleasure, knowing first hand how much he loved the TV production business. Seeing him at the ballpark with his great big smile and always taking time from his work to say hello and reminisce over our old times together will be sorely missed. Thanks, Andy. You were one of the truly greatest guys I've ever known.

To Andy's family we offer our deepest condolences. My four children befriended Andy at US Cellular - just from seeing him around at the games - they adored him. When we went to SoxFest this January, he was there and I think they were more excited about getting their photo taken with Andy than with any of the players! He helped to get my littlest one picked to do the home run promotion and he always put my kids up on the jumbo-tron. He made coming to the park fun and exciting - he always had a smile on his face and a kind word - he was always so nice about explaining his work and how his camera worked, etc. He set such a great example for the kids - so hard working, but so kind. We went to the Cell last Sunday for my kids to do the Junior Pride Crew and their first question was "Where's Andy?" When we found out he had passed away on Wednesday, we couldn't believe it - he had seen 2 of my kids on Tuesday night at the game and had put them up on the Jumbo-tron. The Pride Crew members gave my kids the special yellow AndyCam ribbons they had made to honor Andy and my kids wore them all day and still wear them. They will never forget his kindness, enthusiasm, patience, and love of life. We know he did many great things in life, but we wanted you to know that he also did many small things, that meant a lot, too. He touched our lives and we will always feel his presence with us at the Sox games. When I find the photo I have of my kids with Andy at Sox Fest, I will send it to the Sox to forward to you - I think you would enjoy seeing it. We all loved Andy and will never forget him. We extend our deepest sympathies to you.

I was truly saddend to hear about Andy's passing. He was a great guy with a big heart. Andy knew how to bring a smile to one's face. LIfe at the UC and the Cell will be different without him, but everytime someone's picture shows up on the big board, we'll know AndyCam had something to do with it. He will truly be missed.

To Andy's family: We were deeply saddened to hear of Andy's passing. We saw Andy at the Cell every game. It seemed like he always had a smile on his face and a good word for everyone. He was a wonderful person and will be sorely missed. I didn't realize that we had a Kankakee connection, as I also grew up there. Over the years he has made many people happy with their picture being on the Jumbotron, ourselves included. He's gone from the earth, but not from our hearts. Rest in peace.

Oh my, my heart is so heavy right now. Andy Cam was one the honest to God good guys I will ever have had met. His exuberance for life was just so profound. I remember meeting him at the Redwood lounge in Bridgeport and we began to talk about everything and anything. Somehow we got on the subject of the WS and Birthdays (sans him being Andy Cam) and I mention I was a STH and that I’ll be at the game with a whole group of my friends celebrating my B-Day the following month. He then said “I’ll be at that game too” and that is when I told him to come by (there’s always a seat or two around us) and come have a beer or two. Well needless to say, he did show up WITH a Camera on his shoulder and another gentleman with him. It took me about a minute to figure out what was going on. At one point, I thought I won the Publisher Sweepstakes. He had made my 35th Birthday so special two years ago by surprising me by putting me on the jumbo-tron throughout the entire game and making me the most popular in the section I was sitting. I had so many birthday beers coming my way from the crowd, I had to give them away to my friends. Then we carried the celebration on at the wood. I couldn’t believe he remember me and did that for me. The kicker was when I thanked him, he just said “ no, Thank You!” that is a birthday that I will never forget. Life is so short, and I wish we would have stayed in contact after the baseball season. You will be missed and “no, THANK YOU ANDYCAM!!!!!

My deepest heartfelt sympathies to you and your family. I had the honor of working for Andy for my summer college internship (1998). I'm truly thankful for the opportunity he gave me. Most of all, I'm grateful that I had the chance to work with such a great mentor. He will truly be missed.

We knew Andy as a big lovable teddy bear. Always willing to support his professional friends and collegues. We had the privilege of having Andy film our wedding in 2001 (4 days after 9/11) and we watch that video every year. Pat and I wish to extend all our blessings to family and friends. Everytime we went to any sporting event we would always look for AndyCam.
