Alvin Hogan Obituary

Hogan Sr., Mr. Alvin N. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, came to Chicago as a result of the great migration. Upon graduation from Tennessee State University, he met and married the one woman who he would claim as his one and only "Mrs. Hogan" (JoAnne Walker of Birmingham, Alabama). This union produced many blessings, among them, his four children, two sons, Alvin N. Hogan, Sr., Therron L. Hogan (deceased-1996), and twin daughters Kayla Renea' and Kayra Jenea' Hogan. Mr. Alvin N. Hogan, Sr. was a very prominent businessman, and entrepreneur doing business throughout the city of Chicago, state of Illinois, and the county of Cook. He began his very first business venture as a result of a keen entrepreneurial instinct, intuition, and business savvy. Mr. Al Hogan, Sr. owned and operated A & T Moving and Storage Inc. and was one of the first African-Americans to do so, armed with only a dream and a very simple marketing plan. Before the Internet age, and in the absence of technological, and digital-branding techniques. Mr. Al Hogan's approach was simple. He contacted all of his former colleagues at the Cook County Department of Public Aid, called all his hometown friends and former classmates of Memphis Tennessee State (TSU), with a short message: "I'm in the moving business, call me!" A few years later, in 1973, Alvin N. Hogan, Sr. obtained a small business loan and broke ground on one of the first African-American owned and operated hospitality entities in the city of Chicago. He and his (former) wife JoAnne Hogan successfully presided over Hogan's Motel Inc. for 22 years until his retirement. From there, Mr. Hogan shared his entrepreneurial ingenuity with his two sons. In tandem with his second son, Therron L. Hogan, he owned and operated Vendors, Inc., a city of Chicago minority contractor that supplied concessions to municipal and county buildings throughout the city. Mr. Alvin N. Hogan, Sr. would later open a concessions stand business, Hogan's Crispy Corn, in South Shore, that along with his eldest son, Alvin N. Hogan, Jr., he would operate. Mr. Alvin N. Hogan, Sr. leaves an enterprising legacy that he generously shared with all who had the pleasure to meet, know, and love him. His memory will be cherished by his three surviving children: Alvin Jr. and twins Kayla and Kayra Hogan. His second son, Therron L. Hogan, preceded him in death in 1996. In addition to his children, Alvin N. Hogan, Sr. is survived by his former wife, JoAnne Walker-Hogan; one grandson, David K. McGhee; two granddaughters, Alia N. Hogan, Kayris L. McGhee; a great-granddaughter, Anastasia F. James and many friends whom he loved as family.
