Dawson, Almond

Almond Dawson died peacefully in his adopted home of Atlanta, GA. He was beloved by family and friends and the eldest of five children born in Quitman, Mississippi. The family was part of the Great Migration, relocating to Bronzeville in Chicago.

Almond worked in government and musical leadership roles. A gospel music pianist, arranger, composer and choir director, he worked with churches including his home church Monumental Baptist. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Pioneers and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in Chicago. Almond was a member of the Gospel Music Workshop of America and the National Association of Negro Musicians. He retired from the IRS and continued an active life in Chicago and Atlanta.

Almond Dawson is my uncle and he lived a long and active life. We miss him at family events and know he is watching over us from heaven. His obituary was delayed, he passed in November 2022. Words cannot express my love for him, he was always there for me and all of his family and friends. We lost one of the best on earth.
