Albert Ronan Obituary

Ronan, Albert T. 77, of Mundelein, Illinois went to be with our Lord on Sunday, November 28, 2010 after a long illness. Mr. Ronan was born in Cabra, Dublin, Ireland in 1933 and came to the United States in 1955, eventually making his home in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. He later became a naturalized United States citizen in the early 1960's. An excellent carpenter and proud tradesman, Mr. Ronan was well known for his quality craftsmanship and attention to detail on the hundreds of projects and buildings he worked on in Chicago and along the North Shore during his more than 50 years as a carpenter. One of the highlights of Mr. Ronan's career was helping to develop Chicago's Irish American Heritage Center, working as a volunteer with a group of men and women to transform the former Mayfair College into a shining example of Irish culture, that's now recognized as one of the finest facilities in the country. In 1977-1978, he helped restore a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home in historic Oak Park that had been damaged by fire, returning it to its nearly original state. Outside of work, Mr. Ronan volunteered as a Scout Leader for several years in St. Jerome Parish. He was also active at St. Jerome when he lived in Rogers Park and later at Our Lady of the Brook in Northbrook. Mr. Ronan was married to Margaret McDevitt Ronan of Chicago for 52 years and they had six children and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Timothy Michael Ronan who passed away in 1983. A Memorial Service is being planned. My sincere condolences to the entire Ronan family. I have such fond memories of Al, how funny he was, and to this day, I tell everyone the Yimca story.

Al: Marge! Ya got a call today, from some relative of yours, he says he's at the Yimca!
Marge: The what???
Al: You know, the Yimca! He said you'd know what it was.
Marge: The Yimca, the Yimca, I have no idea what that is. Did he spell it out?
Al: Oh ya. It's Y-M-C-Ah....
Marge: You idiot! That's the YMCA!!
Al: That's what I said! The Yimca!

Ah, great memories of a great man. :-)
