Al Martino Obituary

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. (AP) — Singer Al Martino, who played the Frank Sinatra-type role of Johnny Fontane in "The Godfather," died Tuesday afternoon at his childhood home. He was 82.

Publicist Sandy Friedman, of the Rogers & Cowan public relations firm, confirmed Martino's death in the Philadelphia suburb of Springfield, in Delaware County, but didn't cite a cause.

Starting in 1952, Martino was known for hit songs including "Here in My Heart," "Spanish Eyes," "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Volare."

Besides acting in the Marlon Brando classic "The Godfather," Martino sang the 1972 film's title score, "The Love Theme From The Godfather." His Fontane character is a singer and occasional actor and is the godson of Brando's Mafia boss character, Don Vito Corleone.

Martino was born in South Philadelphia as Alfred Cini and was a longtime resident of Beverly Hills, Calif.

Philadelphia radio and television personality Jerry Blavat dined with Martino and his wife on Monday night. Blavat told the Philadelphia Daily News that Martino appeared to be in fine shape and that he was shocked when he learned of the singer's death.

"He was the last of the show business legends," said Blavat, who has played Martino's songs on the radio for years. "There's nobody else. The last of the performers. A magnificent voice."

I met Mr. Martino when I was a child growing up in Cherry Hill NJ. My Aunt was his housekeeper and my dad was his mail man. I sat on his lap at the table by the pool and we ate Quisp cereal. As an adult Christmas just isn't Christmas without listening to Al Martino's Christmas Album.

Judi & Alison,

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Martino when he was in North Royalton Ohio in June of '09. He was such a gracious and kind gentleman to me, my mom and dad and my brother. He was so cool: I would mention a song I remembered when I was a child, and he'd say "oh yeah, that was from 1963, and the flip side was...". I remember thinking that I did not want to leave, that I wanted to talk to him all day. He was so much a part of my family, as we had so many of his records when I was a kid. He seemed like an uncle to me. I loved his warm, soothing voice. I have been listening to his Christmas LP, and his version of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" is the best ever.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

December 17, 2015

Al, Merry Christmas in heaven . Once again thank you and Judi for all the wonderful memories in that too short of a time we all spent together. With all our love and respect . Always, CARL & KAREN.

In my opinion, he was among the greatest singers. He could take any ballad and make it sound better than anyone else could. This was undoubtedly because his immense talent and wonderful individualism were inextricably coupled with his passion to sing from his heart and not his head; as all Italian-Americans do. Additionally, I sincerely believe that he was a fine gentleman. I had the pleasure of working with him at an event in Los Angeles in 1986.

Addio Al. Buona Fortuna. Dicci buon giorno tutti mi familigia la.

For Al...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

December 21, 2009

To the Martino family,

Our sincerest condolences. My parents first took me to Al's concert in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, when I was barely into my teens. I got hooked on Spanish Eyes. Just yesterday, in the car, I was playing Al's CD and my Mom was wondering if he was still giving concerts. Imagine our shock when we found out today that he had passed away. One thing I can say for sure: if he's still giving concerts up in heaven, my beloved father Al, who passed away one year ago, will be one of the first at the gate.

God bless you all and sustain you in this time of grief. Thank-you Al for all the wonderful songs.

I felt so good to see your post on this web site. It sure seems like it has been a long time since we were at Miami. Those were great days. I remember you very well, but of course by Sharon Crider. Sorry we lost touch. I have had a wonderful life to this point, but now of course, things have changed. I was so lucky to meet Al and yes it was while I was a stewardess with American Airlines.(I interviewed with them on campus!)
Al was a wonderful, wonderful person and I was blessed to be his wife. I remember when he played Suttmillers, unfortunately I wasn't there for that engagement, but I remember him telling me about your note.. Hope all is well with you and thank you for this message. I am having a hard time with Al's loss as we were married almost 41 years and he truly was my life. Cherish every day.

Dear Judi,
My sincere sympathy for the loss of your beloved Al. You and I were in the same Freshman dorm & hall at Miami University, and I'll never forget how amazing it was to me when you and Al met (on an airplane!?) and, then, married, and how special I felt when I received a Christmas card from California with a picture of you, Alison and Al. When he came to Dayton, OH, for a singing engagement at Suttmillers, I went to see him, but was disappointed I didn't get the chance to talk with him. I think I sent a note saying that I knew you --his beautiful wife!...so long ago, but how wonderful that he was still in the process of recording an album (as a tribute to you!?)

Thank you for all of the beautiful condolences and letters of memories you have shared with us during the most difficult times of our lives. My father was the greatest talent I have ever known. I can't tell you how many valuable lessons he taught me through the years. He was a very wise man in so many ways. A survivor. I hope I can continue on in life with his strength, courage, discipline and dignity. I hope he continues to guide me for the rest of my life. He was my best friend. I want to thank every one of you for everything you have done to help pull us through this. I have also dedicated a facebook page called FANS OF AL MARTNO. its a discussion group, but it also includes over 100 photographs, articles, rare TV apperances and concerts. If you are not a member of facebook, its easy to sign up an its free. Once you sign on, just to go to the search box and type in FANS OF AL MARTINO. It should pop right up. Tammy,

Thank you very much for the wonderful memories you spoke about.....the Holiday House was such a special night club and always one of Al's very favorite places to perform. Who could forget the waitress waving their napkins at the end of every performance. The audiences there were the best, standing ovations every night.

And yes, Al sure liked to get in that kitchen. He enjoyed cooking for Johnny and Bobby and who ever happened to be there.

It was also holds a very special memory to me because in the H&H room he told my Mother and Father, visiting from Ohio, that he was going to marry me. We did marry Dec.10, 1968 so it will soon be 41 years. They have been an amazing 41 years......he was the best! I was so blessed.
Thank you again for your post and thinking of us.

Mrs. Martino & Family:

I have known Al Martino since 1980. My father-in-law, husband & brother-in-law had known him for much longer than that. We owned a hotel/nightclub in Monroeville, Pa. "The Holiday House", Al played there endless times and was a fantastic performer. He would always sell out.

I loved when he was coming because he would always cook for us, his second love...he would say.

My father-in-law, John Bertera and husband, Bobby Bertera had tremendously funny stories they would tell me about the fun they all had together through the years.

John & Bobby have been in heaven since 1997 and I know your sadness. But when I heard Al had passed, I thought to myself well, I guess when I get up there they will have more stories for me.

Know that your husband & father were loved by many and his music will live on in all of our homes & hearts forever.

I loved your voice Al. You will be missed. I played my 45 of "Here In My Heart" so many times I literally wore it out. I put you right up there with Andrea Bocelli. You were the best male pop singer of my generation. You don't hear rich voices like yours every day. Thank you for all the wonderful music I can continue to enjoy.

My condolences to Mr. Martino's family.

I've always wanted to sing like Al. He had an inestimable quality of warmth in his voice, and he could excel at both singing with incredible intensity, as in the original "Here in My Heart" or "To the Door of the Sun," and at understated crooning, as in "Can't Help Falling in Love" or "Mary in the Morning."

Two of my favorites are "The Next Hundred Years" and "Look Around (You'll Find Me There)." Those recordings ought to be a lot better known than they are.

Peace to his memory and to his survivors.
