Mary Kerr Obituary

KERR, Mary Brock

Mary Brock Kerr, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2025 at the age of 81, with her daughter by her side. Born on August 28, 1943, in Atlanta, Georgia, Mary lived a life of integrity, compassion, and strength that left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.

A proud Atlanta native, Mary graduated from Grady High School in the Class of 1961, attended the University of Miami to study journalism, and went on to earn her law degree from Emory University, School of Law. On May 10, 1968, she was admitted to the Georgia Bar, beginning a meaningful legal career defined by diligence and service.

On January 7, 1972, Mary married William "Bill" H. Kerr. Together, they built a life in the historic Druid Hills area of Atlanta. Outside of work Mary enjoyed attending Druid Hills Baptist Church and spent many years serving as the Sunday school leader of the Beacon Class. She liked visiting art museums across Atlanta, including her favorite, the High Museum of Art. Mary and Bill were married for 51 years until Bill's passing on February 27, 2023, in Atlanta, Georgia.

After Bill's death, Mary moved to Maryland in June 2023 to be closer to her daughter and her two cherished granddaughters. Surrounded by the warmth and love of her family, she spent her final years in a place filled with laughter, care, and the joy of watching her granddaughters grow.

Mary was a woman of deep thought, unwavering principles, and passionate spirit. She was admired not only for her professional accomplishments but also for her wisdom, and quiet humor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Kerr; and her parents, Dr. Robert T. and Evangeline Brock. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer E. Kerr; two granddaughters; brothers, Robert Brock and Richard Kenneth Brock; sister, Robin Rebecca Rutledge; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held on August 7 at 11 AM Church at Ponce and Highland, where friends and family will gather to remember and honor her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mary's memory to Tranquility Base, tranquilitybaseusa.org, reflecting her lifelong commitment to community.

Mary Brock Kerr's legacy is one of love, learning, and quiet courage. Her memory will continue to inspire all who were lucky enough to know her.

Tim and I (Julie) enjoyed knowing Mary as we were neighbors with she and Bill for over 30 years. Mary was a very gracious lady and I always felt warmed by her presence. May she rest in peace and grace.

Mary and Bill were fixtures of the neighborhood long before I moved to Ridgewood Drive in 1980. Mary was a gentle soul with quiet demeanor, deeply caring and insightful. I well remember proud mama Mary wheeling baby Jennifer up and down Ridgewood years ago. :-) I have missed Mary, and Bill as good neighbors and friends. Blessings and peace to you Mary.
