Cheryl Corbett Obituary

Lancaster Cheryl Lynn Slater Corbett, of Lancaster, OH, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at The OSU James Hospital on June 15th, 2024.

Cheryl was born on January 20th, 1946, to Charles Arthur Slater and Eula Jean Scheeler Slater, joining her doting older brother Richard Slater in Logan, OH. She had a wonderful childhood in Athens, OH, where she excelled in various activities, including the Girl Scouts, 4H, Order of the Rainbow Girls Sorority, CMC Sorority, piano, student council, and played clarinet in the band. She was also a majorette at Athens High School, graduating in 1963. Cheryl attended Ohio University Athens, joined the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority, and spent summers traveling in Europe.

After earning her degree in Early Childhood Education in 1967, Cheryl married Dennis Corbett, and they began their married life in Waipahu, HI, where Cheryl taught preschool. After three years in Hawaii, they moved back to Ohio, living briefly in The Plains before purchasing a home in Lancaster in 1972. Cheryl taught early childhood education at the Junior Vocational School at Hocking College in Nelsonville and later at Lancaster High School. In 1978, Cheryl had her daughter, Corinne, and in 1980, her son, Christopher. She taught at Lancaster Montessori when her children attended there. Cheryl loved being an involved mother and homemaker, especially enjoying the holidays and decorating her home for each one. She enjoyed attending Slater family reunions and researching her ancestry. Cheryl became a "Gama"; in 1998 and cherished helping raise her first granddaughter and spending time with all three of her granddaughters. She also had a lifelong love of chocolate, especially chocolate ice cream.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, and by all her aunts and uncles. Cheryl is survived by her brother, Rear Admiral Richard Slater, USN (Ret); her daughter Corinne Corbett and Gary Hurlburt; granddaughter Cindel Corbett and Mihailo Lukic; her son and daughter-in-law, Chris Corbett and Emily Dow; granddaughters Elise and Avalon Corbett; her former husband, Dennis Corbett; and her "bonus daughters," Staci Hedges Kent and Jeni Collins. She is also survived by many extended family members, including her Slater family cousins and Corbett family nieces and nephews, as well as many friends, neighbors, and special friends Holly Allen, Ken Gossel, and Don Redman.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 405 N. COLUMBUS ST., LANCASTER, OHIO 43130.
