Durward Schuetz Obituary
Schuetz, Durward L. "Dewey" Age 84, went peacefully to Heaven with an unwavering faith in Christ on Sunday, January 15, 2017. He was born on February 9, 1932 in Royal, Iowa to Louis and Lillian Schuetz. Dewey grew up in Beecher, IL and graduated from the town's high school. He continued his education at Illinois State University and received a Master's Degree in Education at the University of Illinois. During the 1950's, Dewey joined the Marine Corps and was stationed in Washington, DC. He served with President Eisenhower at Camp David and participated at the dedication of the Iwo Jima Monument. During meetings with his students' families, Dewey met the love of his life, Patricia Shafer. They were married on December 28, 1957. Mr. Schuetz loved being part of the public education system; he was a teacher, principal, and superintendent for District 171 for 36 years. He cared deeply for the students, parents, teachers, and the community. Mr. Schuetz belonged to many educational organizations locally, state-wide, and nationally. Dewey is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Pat Schuetz; children, Scott (Kelly), Michael (Dianne), and Tammy (Nancy); and grandchildren, Alex, Ryan, Anna, Leah, and Maya. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn (Warren) Wiggenhauser; and sister-in-law, Carol Schuetz. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roland Schuetz; sister, Joyce Kregel; nephew:, Gary Wiggenhauser; and sister-in-law, Shirley Roberts. Dewey cherished his memories with his extended family, George and David Shafer, Genevieve, Dennis, and Alan plus their families, nieces and nephews, the Club, school buddies, the Rinkenberger family, and dear friends from Lansing, Dyer, and Beecher. Dewey was passionate about his faith, strong and confident with discussing his core beliefs, and a man that brought laughter and smiles to many. He was forever grateful for God's many blessings. Visitation is on Saturday, January 21 from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Schroeder-Lauer Funeral Home, 3227 Ridge Rd., Lansing, IL. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Dewey will be laid to rest on Monday, January 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, IL. www.schroederlauer.com
