I was very much saddened to hear of Phil's death. Our little gang of Cook (class of 1962) School buddies always had at its nucleus Phil and his wonderful sense of humor. Im so glad I was able to meet Jan and see his beautiful home. Thinking fondly of him and all the crazy times we had growing up on the South Side.

Dear Hansen Family, Please know that Phil served as a true inspiration for many. I am so grateful that our paths crossed in this life. He always served as encouragement and support for me, especially when receiving my first appointment as Principal and during my early years as a CPS administrator. As a professional colleague, Phil was always available and ready to offer sound advice ... for that I remain eternally grateful. Please know that my prayers and thoughts are with you ... may loving memories comfort you and in time, help to soften the sadness of your loss.

Phil made probation into a positive experience. He was the model for central office employees who actually aspired to HELP schools and Principals. Rest in peace, Phil.

Dear Janet and Family,
Obviously you know that I didn't Phil that well. I know if we saw eachother we would say we knew eachother. But I have been reading through all the notes sent on this Guest Book and realize how much I missed knowing only OF Phil and his work for the school system, his family...and now am gaining a better understanding of why you were always smiling and happy Janet. I do believe that we will all be together again one day and when I get there, I will ask GOD to let Phil be one of the first persons I meet there. Be okay..I will pray for you and your family and friends.

Dear Jan and family
Like all of you, I thought I would have Phil in my life forever. That I would continue to meet him for brunch; that I would forever hear his witty and sarcastic commentary about our mutual interests; and that I would always be able to get a reply from him to my emails or phone calls and see posts of his beautiful family on FB. But I do know that I (and you) have stored up years of his stories/conversations, and visions of him in my mind, and that when I have the urge to talk to my friend Phil in the future to share an observation or ask for his opinion - I will continue to hear his response. Forever … he will be with us.
With love, Sue

Sorry I missed the funeral and wake - commitments at school. I loved Phil and have so many wonderful memories. We were the only two people that our homeroom teacher, Mr. Good hated. He made us stand in the corner for talking too much. He was my confidante in high school and good friend from Cook School. I cannot remember for sure, but he was one of the first boys I kissed in one of those stupid adolescent games. So many memories - I will really never forget him Please accept my condolences and prayers.

Dear Jan,
My heart is broken that our world is without Phil. He was the epitome of integrity and caring. His humor and wit could make anyone smile. He taught me so much and was such a good friend. In addition, he made a positive difference for so many children in the schools he touched. Phil, you will be sorely missed.

I will miss Phil very much. I first met him when we were on opposite sides of a little CPS debate. I thought very highly of him during the process even though we disagreed. Somehow, through crazy sets of circumstances, we ended up working together. I have been working in education for over 20 years now and I can say Phil is one of a handful of people that I have ultimate respect and admiration for. I used to tell my wife, “When I grow up, I want to be like Phil.”
I am in the process of switching positions and taking on a bigger challenge. I was really anxious to tell Phil about it and see what he thought. I will miss his guidance.

Jan and Family,
I am greatly saddened by Phil's death. We became great friends initially working on state committees together at ISBE. Believe it or not, a Chicago boy and Belleville boy found our educational philosophies to coincide leading to our great friendship over the past decade that extended to working together for PROACT. Phil was a class act that brought happiness to those around him. He always spoke warmly of his family and cared deeply for each of you. His memory will always bring a smile to my face. I will miss him dearly. May the strength of family and friends be with you at this time. May God bless you and comfort you.

God bless your soul my friend and former CPS colleague. You were a tireless and extraordinary administrator of conviction who blessed Chicago's children and families with your mind of intelligence and your heart of integrity to disaggregate data and dig deep to evaluate student performance outcomes, and you earnestly determined how to move the needle to advance achievement. Though you were a quiet soul, I discovered (on a trip to DC on behalf of Paul Vallas as you spoke to the Memphis Chamber of Commerce on behalf of Congressman Harold Ford, Jr.) that you had a voice of a lion when it came to research and evaluation in defense of what worked, and what was in the best interest of children. Among all the bells and whistles, you were never distracted by the sizzle over the steak. Hundreds of thousands of children are the beneficiaries of your work and advocacy. May your family be comforted by your stellar reputation. May your beautiful spirit rest in peace, and your legacy of leadership endure.
