Patrick Rand Obituary

Rand, Jr. Patrick Charles Of Chicago, IL died unexpectedly on December 25, 2017. He was born August 1, 1963 in Richmond, VA, the beloved son of Marge Rand, who resides in Shreveport, LA, and predeceased by his father, Patrick C. Rand, Sr. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree focused in studio art and sculpture with a concurrent degree in art education. He was a teacher in Richmond Public Schools for 2 years. After moving to Chicago in 1995 he taught in Chicago Public Schools and continued his education earning a Master's in Education, Administration, and Supervision. Patrick's life was devoted to the children he was entrusted with teaching. This led him to constantly find innovative ways to engage his students in living and loving art. He also sought to broaden their world experiences by obtaining grants for special field trips to museums, parks, dance classes, photography, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Patrick was a longstanding member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Teachers Advisory Board. He also established a food pantry through the Greater Chicago Food Depository at his school to help provide fresh nutritious items for his underserved children and families to take home. He worked to involve his students in non-classroom activities such as the grant funding for a butterfly garden at their school. He additionally supported numerous charities. He was passionate about his causes. Patrick was a gifted artist, voracious reader, and avid traveler. He was happiest when surrounded with his special "herds" be they family, friends, or even a group he just met. He never knew a stranger. He was a gracious host, enthralling storyteller, and always the life of the party. We will forever miss his beautiful soul, generous spirit, the light and laughter he brought to all our lives. He is also survived by his sisters, Missy Rand (Wayne Conners), Dee Dee (Lake) Critzer, Melanie Rand, Lori (Mike) Kennedy; his nieces and nephews, Patrick (Rachel) Rand and son, Riley, Ashlie (Tyler) Buell and daughter, Leah, Brian Horning, Kate Horning, David Horning, Morgan Barker and Haley Barker; his special friends, Jose Avila and Lisa DaFoe, and innumerable friends worldwide. Memorial arrangements are pending in Shreveport and Chicago. Following his exemplary life, we know our dearest Patrick is in a better place. Thank a teacher this week who has impacted your life like Patrick did. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a children's charity or foodbank of your choice.

Ron, thank you for remembering my sweet brother on the sad anniversary of his loss. He was such an amazing man and had such a kind and generous spirit. I will share your note with my mother Marge . It has been for 2 years now that we all have been feeling the void his death has left. I miss his laughter and contagious joy, love of teaching and of life every day . My world is not the same without him in it.

I am so thankful for my friendship with Patrick. The first thing he said to me was "We are going to be friends" and we were. Patrick gave me my first "tour" of Pickard and now I miss him daily at school. However, the memories we shared here in our work with students has made me a better teacher and person. Patrick, I miss eating lunch at the taco place and I miss listening to the stories of your amazing life. You were so genuine and nice to me even though our worlds were so different. I miss you. May God Bless you and your family and Jose at this time. Erin.

I miss you so much, the dog misses you. knowing you, changed my life for the better. I will have to grow impatients every summer in your honor. Every spring you would fill your balcony with impatients and then take off around the world for summer break, leaving me to water all your plants. I kept trying to get you to buy something else because I truly did not like impatients, they have suddenly become my favorite plant.

Mr. Rand was at Tilden for a very short time. I was stunned to hear of his untimely passing. During the time he was here, we were in the process of forming what I believe would have been a wonderful professional as well as personal friendship. He always had a smile for the children and a kind word for all. He had a good work ethic and was showing that he could form relationships with students.
What opened up my heart was what appeared to be his love for the students in my low incident program. A program for students with moderate to severe disabilities. He was looking toward having his students work with my students periodically to give them more art exposure because as I told him, I am artistically brain dead. He had already mad the cutest penguins with my students.
I will miss Mr. Rand and I am praying for you his close family and friends

Dearest Aunt Marge,
Missy, Dee Dee, Melanie, Lori and your families,
Your Son and Brother was quite a man; full of generosity, compassion and talent. Pat enhanced his communities, and everyone he encountered on his life's path.
As a youngster, I was so excited for Aunt Marge/Uncle Pat, and his three sisters when he was born. With my family, I visited your home in RVA. Shortly later, Lori was born, completing the tribe and that incomparable smile was born on Pat's handsome face..... the smile which radiates light from within.
My deepest sympathies, Dear Ones.
Much love, Dianne

Dear Marge and girls
I am so taken back and I hardly know what to say having. Just read of Patrick's passing in the Richmond news paper
It seems as though it were just yesterday that this nice little boy was sitting next to me on your couch when I was visiting you.
When Patrick was still living in Richmond and attending VCU, we would run into one another, and after he went to Chicago we kept in touch via email. It made me feel so good to hear of his joy and contributions to children's education. Of course, he kept me in the news about all of you. I will always remember his ever-present smile. My thoughts and prayers go to you as I wrap my arms around all of you, my dear friends.

I know that God gave you a mission to fulfill in this world, He saw you went above and beyond His expectations, and decided it was time to hold you tightly in His embrace. I thank God that He put you in my life to learn from your greatness. The world is a better place because you were here. I know that one day we will meet again my dear friend.
