East Point and Saint Gertrude's Parish along with Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago will be a sadder place without the humor and joy of Marty and the twinkle in his eye when he told a joke or just said "hi." Sympathy and condolences to Carol and Marty's family

Marty and my husband Tim talked on the phone every morning for about an hour. They shared thoughts and opinions about the Church and politics. Good friends . Now both are gone.

Marty said the toast at my wedding reception. I think I gave him 5 minutes notice, but I knew he would give it the right amount of humor and meaning, and he did.

i'll never forget what he told me at his mom's (aunt mary to me) wake, "don't cry for her she is in heaven we are the ones left behind to miss her." so i'm not scared for him just that much sadder for the rest us left behind.

Carole, We (my whole family) always enjoyed our times with with Marty. I'll personally miss my philosophical discussions with him. I definitely benefited in having him as my "friend". We are really going to miss him! Marty would get a laugh from this, but if he can hear me, I must ask him to "put in a good word for me"! Warm regards, John Redell

My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to Marty's family and friends in your time of loss. Marty was a very kind man and I had the pleasure serving him and the rest of the Romeos for many years at Gullivers. He will be missed.

Our thoughts are with all who knew and loved Marty, our prayers are with you Carol. Marty was a tremendous help to me back in 1970. And throughout the years, he was always present at Mass when one of the priests died - active or resigned - in my religious community. (Scalabrinians). Marty, you proclaimed the Gospel eloquently.

Carol, our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy are with you in the loss of Marty! You were both very special to us...helped us grow in love for God and His people. We think back often to the sharing we did during those times in Waukegan!

Frank McCarthy, friend of Marty, put me in touch with Marty when I left religious life almost 40 years ago. I did have a chance to meet Marty and Carol in that same time frame but was an "easterner" and so had little time in Chicago - but Marty's network was domestic and international. His reward will be immense for all the charity that he extended to those of us who were "newbies" and fresh out of religious life. May he rest in peace and THANKS, MARTY!
