Joi “SJ” Harris, a stunt performer working for the movie “Deadpool 2,” died Monday, Aug. 14, 2017, in an accident performing a stunt, according to multiple news sources.

The native of Brooklyn, New York, was a pioneering African-American motorcycle racer. She called herself “the first licensed African-American woman in U.S. history to actively compete in sanctioned motorcycle road racing events,” according to People magazine.

Harris was the stunt double for Zazie Beetz, who plays the comic-book character Domino. She lost control of her motorcycle during the stunt and crashed into the Shaw Tower in Vancouver, British Columbia. She was not wearing a helmet at the time since the character does not wear one.

“Deadpool 2” star Ryan Reynolds released a heartfelt statement Monday confirming Harris’s death.

“We’re heartbroken, shocked, and devastated… but recognize nothing can come close to the grief and inexplicable pain her family and loved ones must feel in this moment. My heart pours out to them – along with each and every person she touched in this world.”

“I’m deeply saddened by the loss of one of our stunt performers today,” “Deadpool 2” director David Leitch said in a statement to People magazine. “No words can express how I and the rest of the crew feel about this tragedy. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and loved ones in this difficult time.”
