Cole, Jerome "Jerry"

Jerome "Jerry" Allen Cole, 96, beloved husband and best friend for 51 years to Caryl Cole. Dedicated companion to Lois Shapiro for 18 years. Together, he and Caryl raised 6 children; Kim (Jay) Santich, Dennis (Cindy) Cole, Wendy (Jeff) Henning, Deedee Cole, David Cole, Melanie (Gary) Petrasek, resulting in 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. As a couple, they were surrogate parents to everyone they met.

Jerry was a calm, quiet intellectual, who knew that what mattered most in his life were the people he loved. Later in his life he finally found the job of his lifetime - as a tutor of the maths and sciences at Oakton Community College (who named the Tutor of the Year award after him). His patience, his compassion, his humor and his passion for learning and critical thinking instilled confidence in his students, his children, and all those who were lucky enough to know him.

His true memorial will be keeping his memory alive by sharing his stories. He will be greatly missed. A memorial service is planned for the future. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by Chicago Jewish Funerals - Skokie Chapel, 847.229.8822, www.cjfinfo.com

I knew what a terrific husband and father Jerry was by spending a lot of time with Caryl, who was my brilliant and wonderful supervisor at Pioneer Press. She shared many stories of family life and her pride in her devoted husband and six children, who were my contemporaries. Caryl and Jerry invited me into their home for my first Passover. Although I had met Jerry and their kids when they dropped by the office, it was great to see them all together at home. May Jerry rest in peace.
