Surprised to discover that you are the 'Felio' of my childhood! The father of Miriam Sanchez, Aracelis Sanchez, Sara Sanchez (R.I.P.) and Orlando Sanchez...my childhood friends of 'Taylor Street'!
You never ever spoke about your military service to me back then (or to anybody as I found out today at your funeral service...not even to your own son Orlando!).
All this time I was the designated Illinois Liaison and Coordinator for the national 'Borinqueneers Congressional Gold Medal Alliance'. Little did you or I know that before you passed on to the other side, we achieved the Congressional Gold Medal that had elluded your steller and legendary unit until June 10, 2014 when President Barack Obama signed Public Law 113-120 after a year long struggle!
Today I learned from your niece Iliana Agosto, that she brought back to you the copy of your Congressional Gold Medal from the award ceremony on April 13, 2016 at the nation's capitol. You couldn't attend this historic ceremony because of your illness. The first thing you asked her when she returned and went to see you was, "where is my medal?!"
You are a 'War Hero' and served our nation and Puerto Rico honorably. The medal was well worth the wait and certainly well deserved! Thank you for having crossed each other's path and for your service Felio...and may God speed!
HAND SALUTE AND HONOR ET FIDELITAS!
