Retired City of Wellston Chief of Police, Tim Ackley, age 64, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2024, surrounded by his family and loved ones at the Holzer Medical Center in Jackson. He was born June 30, 1960 in Frankfort, Ohio to James Elton Ackley and Betty Jean Spriggs Ackley. Tim was a 1978 graduate of Adena High School in Frankfort and the Ohio Police Officers Training Academy. Following over 30 years of employment, Tim retired in 2018 from the City of Wellston where he served as an auxiliary officer, police officer, and ended his tenure as Chief of Police. Throughout the years, Tim was community focused, especially regarding the area youth. Being quite the sportsman, he coached pee-wee baseball, softball, football, and basketball for over 30 years. Most notably, he was a certified school resource officer and spearheaded the D.A.R.E program which taught an anti-drug message in Wellston City Schools. During his retirement years, Tim was presently working for the Vinton County Sheriff’s Department as a security guard at the Vinton County Courthouse. In his spare time, he enjoyed going to the casino as well as doing home renovations. He always had some type of project going on. Tim was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan and a huge fan of the Wellston Golden Rockets. Most importantly, he cherished the time spent with his family, especially the grandchildren. Tim is survived by his wife of 24 years, Dee Jones Ackley; children, Josh Ackley (Sarah), Samantha Ackley, Kayla Burns (Dusty), and TJ Denney (Heather); daughter-in-law, Chelsey Jones; father, James Ackley; siblings, Cathy Blazer (Dan), Jimmy Ackley (Rhonda), Molly Jenkins (Vernon), Virgil Ackley (Julie), and Danny Ackley (Tami); father-in-law and mother-in-law, Delbert and Barb Jones; sisters-in-law, Annette Jones (Jeff Garvin), Missy Jenkins, and Krissi Taynor (BJ); brother-in-law, Doug Harris (Lori), along with 17 grandchildren, expecting his first great-grandchild in March, Daxton Allan; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Ackley; son, Josh Jones; Grandma Spriggs, and his brother-in-law Brent Jenkins. Calling hours will be Saturday, October 26th, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Tim was a true friend and first-class. American citizen. He tried to help save my job when the vultures were after me and he was best resource officer in Ohio. He raised good, well-behaved children, and he cared for every kid who came within his purview Wellston is poorer for his passing. -jim downard

Dee & family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. Tim was a very special kindhearted person.
I always enjoyed our daily conversations at the courthouse, and he always made the day even better on Fridays
when he would call up and say, "come downstairs I've got Amish donuts". I'm glad I had the opportunity to work
with Tim and will miss him.
