Thomas Joseph Sutch, 79, of Ballwin, MO, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025.

Born in Painesville, Ohio on December 14, 1945, Tom was the second youngest of six children born to Paul and Veronica Sutch. He grew up in Painesville and attended Cleveland State University, where he proudly joined the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He graduated in 1968 with a degree in Chemical Engineering.

Following his education, Tom served in the U.S.  Army from 1968 to 1970. He trained as a medic and earned the Outstanding Trainee Award. During his service in Germany, he was chosen to help the Army base children and adult teams in coaching basketball, bowling, and golf.

After his military service, he embarked on a successful career in the manufacturing and construction industries. He worked for Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, Tremco Commercial Sealants and Waterproofing, and The Garland Company. In 1978, he relocated to St. Louis where he continued his career with C. Martin Roofing and Bartch Roofing plus co-managing a consulting firm with his brother David. He retired at the age of 67.

Tom was a member of the Elks and President of his condominium association.  A passionate sports enthusiast, he was a superior bowler and was proudly inducted into the St. Louis Bowling Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed golf, and watching horse racing, football and basketball.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Barbara Fazekas and his brother, Paul Sutch. He is survived by his siblings: Richard (Phyllis) Sutch in Florida, Mary Behnke in Ohio and David (Nancy) Sutch, St. Louis, MO. and numerous nieces and nephews.  While he never had children of his own, he was a beloved uncle to Jennifer Lough, Meredith Sutch, Janine Muntean, and Kristen Mallonee.

As teenagers in Painesville, Tom was one of our very small unofficial Chestnut Street “gang” members. There was Dick, Lee, Tom, younger brother David, myself, and a few from other streets. Tom coaxed us up to the empty lot behind his house for football, kick ball, volleyball or baseball ( using a basketball so the ball didn’t sail out beyond the lot ). If not sports, you might find some of us walking the Nickel Plate railroad tracks near his house trying to see what kind of mischief we could get into. I’ll always remember Tom’s smile and laughter. RIP buddy.

I know when I see my brother Tom in the great beyond, he will be at the Harness Horse track with my deceased brother Paul. Tom’s greatest joy was at the track or betting on college basketball or football. He never bet much but just wanted the action. When he came to visit us in Florida, we always had to be around a phone at 7:00 pm so he could place his bets. May he rest in peace.

I remember m Uncle Tom for his care-free nature, always ready to say, “Can you change it? Then why worry about it.” Tom could send the funniest cards, my kids still talk about the one that read “I picked this one for you!” A truly great uncle that will be missed!

Tom and I were childhood best friends starting in elementary school and Little League up through high school and beyond. We played baseball together for many years especially in high school and in summer breaks during our college years. Tom was much more than just a friend. He was more like a brother.
Tom, I hope you are at peace and in a better place. May God bless and watch over you. I will miss you my friend!!
