Dr. Robert Lund Obituary

Dr. Robert Herluf Lund, 99, of Naples, FL died Friday, February 14, 2025. Bob lived a long and colorful life, showering love on family and friends, healing as a physician, getting “down to earth” at his farm in Hermann, MO, and concocting fun activities for children and grandchildren.  His smile and laugh were infectious!

Bob was born April 22, 1925 to Herluf and Alma Lund in St. Louis, MO. He grew up in University City, MO, attending University City High School and called St. Louis home for 90 yrs. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17 for WWII in 1943. He was stationed as a Navy Corpsman at Great Lakes Naval Base. They sent him to Miami University of Ohio to do premedical courses. He completed medical school at Washington University in St. Louis and began a surgical residency. There he fell in love with and married Gloria Johnson, a surgical nurse. Together they raised three children and celebrated 55 years of marriage. The family worshiped at Central Presbyterian Church.

In 1951 Bob was deployed with the US Army as a MASH surgeon in Korea. Upon his return, he completed his surgical residency in St. Louis. He performed general and vascular surgery at Barnes Hospital and later at St. Luke’s Hospital. After retiring from surgery, he helped to launch the Breast Center at St. Luke’s Hospital. He developed the Denver Shunt and procedures to improve breast cancer treatment.

Bob served for many years as an Assistant Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Counselor for the BSA. As an avid outdoorsman, he was a proficient instructor in multiple camping skills and, more importantly, was a wonderful role model for the scouts.

Bob and Gloria bought a farm in Hermann, MO in 1969. There he raised cattle, rode horses, hunted, fished, played with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and hosted many friends. The beautiful farm was his happy place, and he enjoyed sharing it with others!

After Gloria’s passing, Bob met Carmella McDonnell in Naples, FL and they married in 2008.  He embraced her large Chicago family of 4 children, 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, who adored “Dr. Bob.” They celebrated 16 years of marriage, spending time in Naples, at the farm, in St. Louis, in Chicago, enjoying a full social life and traveling.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carmella, his son, Rob (Sara) Lund, daughters Susan (Don) Schnurpfeil and Sarah Lund, 5 grandchildren: Nathan (Christine), Christopher (Katie), Emily (Andrew) Tipping, Caroline (Paul) Moores, Marian (Adam) Bolton, 8+ great-grandchildren, and Carmella’s extended family.

Services: The family is so grateful for his nearly 100 years. His love, laughter, and joy in life will always be part of us. Bob will be buried with military honors at Jefferson Barracks, MO. A private memorial service will be held afterwards. Memorials can be directed to:  MSC 1082-414-2555, Washington University School of Medicine, 1 Brookings Dr, St. Louis, MO 63130-9989 for medical research. As a service of the SCHRADER Funeral Home and Crematory, friends may sign the family's on-line guestbook at Schrader.com.

Dr. Bob was a Piper family favorite! We all share fond Willow Hill memories, growing up in our wonderful neighborhood together. I have a scar on my chin from a playground mishap at the age of 6. My Mom took me in to Dr. Bob who calmed me down by letting me know he would sew up my wound, making it look like a turkey in honor of the upcoming holiday. I was so excited! Unfortunately, when I proudly showed my Dad Dr. Bob’s handiwork, I discovered it was 8 stitches of a fairly straight lineI soon forgave him! There was no kinder, happier, wonderful man than Dr. Bob! So many treasured memories of him, Mrs. Lund, Rob, Susan and Sarah. My deepest condolences to each of you. What a blessing Dr. Bob was to so many. Thank you for sharing him! Sending love to each of you.

I was friends with Sarah in elementary school. One weekend she took me to their farm. I remember Dr.Lund letting us sit on the (parked) tractor, and all cooking breakfast together in the farm house kitchen. My heart goes out to you all at this difficult time.

Dr. Lund fixed my broken nose when I was 5, fixed a broken hand at 10, double pierced my ears at 13, even though Mom said “you were not born that way” LoL, took my appendix & gall bladder out at 24 and through all his care & friendship was always kind and sweet. When my father was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, Dr. Lund offered his stalwart advice; Compassion was Dr. Lund to a tee. Remembering a marvelous person and sending our love & prayers to the Lund Family.
