Dr. Alfred D. Shaplin FACR, passed away, Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
Beloved husband of the late Diana Shaplin (nee Pogue). Loving father of Judson, Christopher and Benjamin Shaplin. Dear brother of John Shaplin and Helen Dechtiar. Dearest brother-in-law of Sherry Harbison. Dear uncle and friend of many. He is preceded in death by his parents, Judson T. and Phillipa (nee Dunham) Shaplin.
Alfred was born in Boston, Massachusetts and attended Phillips Academy Andover. He served his country honorably as a Naval Corpsman, attached to the United States Marine Corps. Alfred attended Washington University for his under graduate degree and later earned his medical degree from St. Louis University Medical School. He practiced radiology as a partner with the Scott Radiological Group and was a Fellow of the American College of Radiology.
Alfred's highest priority in life was his family and he often sacrificed his personal interests for his family's interests. He found much enjoyment in life through music, particularly blues music. He was a life-long soccer fan, who attended countless Billikens and Steamers games. He also excelled as a children's soccer coach. Alfred was an avid reader of all books.
Alfred will be forever remembered as a kind, honest, generous, hard working, reliable family man, friend and professional. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

I am Alfred’s “little sister”, but not so little myself anymore! His passing took me by surprise until I realized he had a long and fulfilled life as a dedicated doctor and family man. As others have said, he was generous and thoughtful. I appreciated how he showed respect for my beliefs and for me as a person. For much of our lives we lived far apart geographically, but highlights are when he came all the way to Brazil to my wedding to stand in for my dad who had passed away. Alfred had a strong sense of duty, loyal and true. Then a few years ago, my husband Jairo and I visited him during the World Cup soccer games. It was great to share that time with Alfred, Jud, Ben and Chris. We are all soccer fans! Now these are special memories among others.

Doc was one of the kindest and most caring people I’ve known. I am blessed to have grown up with his boys and with Doc and Mrs Shaplin as very close family friends. This was back in the day when our friends’ parents had nearly as much authority over us as our own parents. Doc took me to many Steamers games over the years with the boys with a stop at Steak n Shake near the Arena pregame. He would come to many of my high school soccer games with my Mom and Dad and I could always hear his strong, booming voice cheering in the same manner I could hear my own parents. I enjoyed coaching the Sonics with him when the team was initially formed. As a great friend to my parents we always had lots of good family time with the Shaplins. Jud, Ben, and Chris, please know how much your father cared about you and how proud he was of all of you.

My brother was a good man, dedicated to his wife and boys and a conscientious professional who always treated me with great respect and generosity. We had our youthful differences but over the years we ironed those out and mostly saw eye to eye on most things. My sympathies go to Jud, Chris and Ben, they loved him very much, and I’m sure they are grateful for the provisions he made for them and will
miss him very much. All my kids have very good memories of Uncle Al. Goodbye brother and faithful friend.
