Stanley Dawson Obituary

Dawson Sr., Stanley C. "Jerry" Age 87, of Oak Lawn, Illinois, the captain of our family ship, landed on that other shore January 23, 2015. Beloved husband of Marilyn (nee Applin) for 65 beautiful years; loving father of Clyde (Karen), Donna (John Lalor), Gail (Pat) Staples, Tim, Stanley, Jr. (Kathy), and Michael (Mary); cherished grandfather of Kristin Tracz, Jesse and Peter Staples, Lindsey (Eddie) Brodsky, Alex, Megan, Joseph, and Emma Dawson, and step-granddaughter Candice (Josh) Hameister and their son, Jack; dear brother of the late Norval (Donna) and Marilyn Dawson (Charlie) Jarvis, and fond uncle of many nieces and nephews. Stan was born April 15, 1927, in Highland Park MI to Stanley H. and Ruth (Coller) Dawson. He graduated high school early to serve in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Following his service, he married Marilyn Applin, on April 23, 1949, then graduated from Lawrence Institute of Technology, Highland Park MI, with a bachelor of business administration in 1950. He and his brother, Norval were partners in a television and electronics store, Park Magnavox, in Evergreen Park IL, which remained in business 48 years. He was a member of School Board District 123 and the Oak Lawn Chamber of Commerce, and served on the Board of Directors of Oak Lawn Trust and Savings Bank for many years. He was very generous toward the community, active in many organizations such as the Oak Lawn Kiwanis Club, Salvation Army and Oak Lawn VFW. For several years, he worked with Hines VA hospital to organize boat trips on Lake Michigan for blind veterans. He loved boating, fishing and travel. Upon his passing, his wife, Marilyn, said, "This is a sad day. But the love is never gone." A memorial will be held Saturday, January 31, at 11:00 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, 9717 S. Kostner Ave., Oak Lawn, IL, 60453. In lieu of flowers, memorials made to VFW Post #5220, 9514 S. 52nd Ave., Oak Lawn, IL 60453 would be appreciated. Sending love to you all from Florida also. Our Dad would have greeted his brother as he crossed over. Our Uncle has been reunited with all his friends and family that have been waiting. We will be with you all in spirit this Saturday. Thank you for writing such wonderful things about our Uncle Stan. As kids we had so much fun on his boat with our cousins. He loved his teak railings on his yacht (Retreat) they shined like his smile. We love you U.S.

What a beautiful tribute to a truly remarkable man! The friendship that he shared with my dad (and mom) and his devotion to him and Marilyn was so very touching and telling of his true character. We were all so blessed to have him in our lives. His legacy will live on forever through his family and friends.
P.S. We also still have his Allante, which Matt will always treasure as a remembrance of your dad.

Anyone who knew my Uncle Stan was blessed to have him in their life. Although I live in Florida I spoke with him most every Sunday. I looked forward to our conversations and always closed with "Ya know, every time I hang up the phone with you I have a great big smile..." To which he would reply "That's funny because I do too..." This picture really captures his spirit and his love and pride for his family. That's the smile attached to the voice on the other end of the phone and I will miss that dearly...until we meet again.
With love and admiration,
Mark Dawson, MD
