John Henry Quilhot Obituary
Quilhot, John Henry 87, of Carthage, formerly of Markham, passed away at 5:12 p.m., Monday, May 26, 2014 at Memorial Hospital in Carthage. John was born December 10, 1926, in Royal Center, Indiana, the son of Ralph "Homer" and Mary Quilhot. He graduated from Plainfield High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. On June 28, 1947, he was united in marriage to Jean Louise Williams in Chicago. She preceded him in death in 2011. John had been a boilermaker and pipefitter with Pipefitters Local 597. His work ethic was vitally important to him. He and Jean lived in Markham from 1957 until 2009, when they moved to Carthage to be near their daughter. John quickly appreciated small town living and the relationships he developed. He was a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears and an avid fan of all types of car racing. He was a mechanic member of the United States Auto Club and traveled all over the country as a member of pit crews. John was once a member of a pit crew in the Indianapolis 500. John is survived by a son, Barry (Sue) Quilhot of Chicago; a daughter, Maureen (David) Crawford of Carthage; three grandchildren, Gabrielle (Chad Hahn) Rysula of Grants Pass, Oregon, Jonathan Shumaker of Wood River, Illinois, and Sarah (Dave Degarmo) Self of Quincy, Illinois; and two great-grandchildren, Dade Self and Sadie Hahn. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ralph; and his wife, Jean. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Hancock County Health Department or Food for Thoughts. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
