I have known Wayne since 1961 when I moved to Chicago from the east. He was a wonderful person with a wry humor. I miss him.

Wayne was a good friend and mentor for 50 years. I cherish the times I was able to spend with him in Chicago and after hours at the St. Louis Ragtime Festival. His legacy and influences endures and, I hope, will inspire many rhythm players in the future.

Wayne-
Sorry you're gone, but you'll not be forgotten. As well as a love for traditional jazz, Wayne and I shared an enthusiasm for WWII aircraft, and kept up a regular dialog about them. Another reason I'll miss him.

Wayne was not only a fine musician but a jazz scholar as well. His liner notes were to be read word for word, always increasing your appreciation of the music inside. How fortunate we were to honor him at the Bixfest this year.

For years, when we needed to know about something, someone in jazz, we asked Wayne. A fine, fine musician and a loving person. He never minced words or lost the beat.

I followed Wayne's career for over 55 years. Once I asked him why I chose to keep my 10" LPs and sell my standard 12" Lps and he said, "The 10" LP is the right size and similar to our beloved 78s. Four tunes per side is just about right, too." What a profound guy. We are happy Wayne was able to attend The Tribute to Bix fest at the Racine-Marriott this past March. It was our thrill to honor him for a lifetime of good music and not easy for Charlotte to drive him up there but he wanted to come. See you soon, man!

I followed Wayne's career for over 55 years and once asked him why I saved my 10" LPs after selling my standard 12" LP jazz collection? He agreed with the decision to save 10" LPs and said, "You saved them because they are just the right size, similar to our beloved 78's and four tunes per side is just about right. too." What a profound guy. We are so happy he was able to attend the last Tribute to Bix fest in March at the Racine-Marriott. It could not have been easy for Charlotte to drive him there. The honor was all ours to give back to him for a lifetime of good music.

Loss of a truly great friend and fellow traditional jazz musician. On one of our many talks on band breaks I mentioned my favorite trombonist, Lou McGarity. Months later on a break at Andy's Wayne handed me a bag filled with cassettes. He had taped every McGarity solo from all his enormous record collection. I still play them in my car whenever I'm driving somewhere. What a guy. I look back with a smile at the many years we played jazz together.

Sympathies to all of Wayne's many friends and musical colleagues. I've been enjoying listening to his work with James Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band. An excellent drummer!

I remeber "sessions" in Lafayette in the 50's with Wayne, Jim Snyder, and John Cooper; all great jazz men and good friends. May they all rest in peace.
