Memories and Condolences
for Virlene Athern

Not sure what to say?

I can't believe she's been gone 10 years. My mom and I had a bond, a closeness not many sons get to have with their mothers. From early childhood memories, to being my constant pen pal when I enlisted, my trusted confidant, unwavering and unyielding support....mom you were the best mother any son could want, a great sister, wife, and grandmother. You were so much to so many people and were the most unselfish person I've ever known. You truly are missed but will never be forgotten. Much love and I look forward to seeing you again

Dear Brian, Mikki, Pat and Brian:
It's almost been a year since we lost Vir and the heartache still lives on in all of us. I know it's been difficult journey without her for all of us and especially for her family that she was always so proud of. I think of "My Sissy" everyday and those thoughts bring back such wonderful moments that I had the honor of sharing with her. I know you all must have truckloads of memories to sustain you through the hard times, but it's comforting to know that she is always with us in our hearts and in everything we do as our Guardian Angel. Your Mom, my sister, our sister is deeply missed. I love you all. Auntie Arlyce

I'm not sure if you will remember me from South Cicero Baseball. I played on the Lions in T-ball and the Orioles in the majors. I recently learned of Virlene's passing and I wanted to express my sympathy for your loss. I will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Brian and Family,
We hope that your aching hearts heal quickly when filled with the special memories that each of us has of Virlene. We send our heartfelt sympathy to each of you. When you were tenants in Cicero, Steve and Greg remember Vir coming home from work with buckets of soup to share. Tina still keeps a crocheted afgan on her office chair that is over 25 years old! And when Vir worked at St. Anthony's, it was she that called to tell us of Dad's brother passing. She was special, caring and fun. We were blest to know her.

What can i say about Virlene that you dont already know. the way that she would help you at the drop of a hat or that she was a caring mother or that her grandchildren were the light of her life? for me her passing has left a huge hole that will never be filled. I love you Vir. thanks for being a great sister.

Brian, Mikki, Pat & Brian and all her grandkids:
She was the wind beneath our wings--all of us were her favorites--her unwavering love and support were evident every day. To me she was the best big sister--from our early days growing up, to finding the love of her life Brian and having 3 great kids. I will remember the "Vir Express" getting me to the hospital for Lauryn's birth, and the way she helped us raise Lauryn & Katy. You could never call what she did "babysitting." She was at my side during all the important times of my life. She loved all of us, and we will love and miss her always, until we are all reunited again.

I have so many wonderful and funny memories and stories of Vir as do scores of folks at St. Anthony hospital. The number of us who have a crochet gift from Vir is countless. How we treasure them! Our love and prayers are with you all, Vir's treasured family. God be with you.
