Jerry Martin Obituary
Martin, Jerry Age 95, of Melbourne, Florida and formerly of Chicago, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2017 in Florida. Born in 1921, he attended school in Chicago and was a graduate of Lake View High School and the University of Chicago, where was captain of the water polo team. He enlisted and served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force in WWII, and then returned to join his family business, the Rembrandt Lamp Company. He later joined Cellu-Craft Products, and was a pioneer in the flexible packaging business. He moved to Florida in the mid-1970s, and established a successful real estate sales business, helping people buy land and homes across the state. Jerry was an avid scuba diver until age 85, and was known for his musical talents, which included singing and piano. He credited his longevity to his lifelong passion for exercise, which he started at an early age and continued until recent years. Jerry was also a believer in the power of positive thinking, and often posted sayings on his car dashboard, which today are featured in motivational posters. One that he taught his children was, "Success is not in doing what you like, but in liking what you do."He also frequently quoted Winston Churchill's words, "We make a living by what we earn; we make a life by what we give." He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 42 years, Kay Martin, and three devoted children, Terry Savage, Scott Markoff, and Mickey (Karen) Markoff. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Rex (Janeen) Savage and Jett Markoff, and was predeceased by a granddaughter, Emily Markoff. As well, he leaves two great-grandchildren, Lucy and Allison Savage. He is also survived by his older brother, Del Markoff (Phyllis), age 99. Another brother, Alvin, predeceased him. His many nieces and nephews also mourn his loss, along with a legion of friends across the country. Services have been held.
