Irving Zitman Obituary

Zitman, M.D., Irving H. Dr. Irving Zitman, born April 10, 1915 on a ranch outside of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Irving's family moved to Chicago where he attended Carl Schurz High School. He received a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University and his Doctor of Medicine from University of Illinois. He was the beloved husband of the late Florence (nee Bomze). They married in 1938. During World War II, Dr. Zitman served as a Captain in the Army Medical Corps. Returning to Chicago, he built up his private practice in Internal Medicine. He was a brilliant physician and was recognized as such by his appointment to Chief of Staff and President of Michael Reese Hospital in the 1960's. After retiring from practice in 1988, Irv served as an expert medical witness in the California court system and reviewed medical claims for the Social Security office in Chicago until 2009. He had an insatiable intellectual curiosity for everything from world events to sports and the humanities. Even at age 99 he never stopped studying medicine. He is survived by his loving daughters, Marylou Denenberg, Karen (Marvin) Herman, Susan (Dennis) O'Connell, Nancy (Vincenzo) Demasi; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces; and 2 nephews. Memorial service will be held at Piser Funeral Services, 9200 Skokie Blvd., Skokie, IL 60077 on Tuesday, February 3 at 12:00 noon. In lieu of flowers, donations to Jewish United Fund (JUF) will be appreciated. Info: 847-679-4740.

Condolences goes out to Dr Zitman's children. He had your pictures on his desk while he worked at Social Security. He loved his family. . Dr Zitman was a very kind and knowledgeable doctor. It was a pleasure whenever I talked with him about medical issues as they related to the Social Security Administration Disability Program. Rest in Peace Dr. Z

I worked with Dr. Zitman for more than 20 years at Social Security. processing disability claims . I worked with a wide range of physicians, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Hands down Dr. Ziitman was the birightest medical consultant I worked alongside. Conferring with Dr. Zitman on a case was an absolute pleasure since he had a Solomon ability to assess tthe totality of the claimant's impairments. He loved his golf and always looked 20 years younger than his actual age.. My condolences to his family.

My husband and I are truly saddened by the death of dear Dr. Zitman. He worked for me at Social Security for many years until I retired in 2002. He was kind, caring, thoughtful and just a wonderful human being. He helped me on many occasions with medical decisions I needed to make for myself. He was my best co-worker; not an employee. He kept urging me to go visit him in Palm Desert each winter and I am sorry I did not go. I will miss his gentleness. What a great human spirit! Sharon Pekoz and husband James
