Babe, you were my first REAL boss, and I appreciate all that you did for me; you taught me the values of hard work and doing things the "right" way. I also remember many of your famous sayings, like "The door swings BOTH ways, in and out!" and "You know . . . you know . . . " and, of course, "You think WE have problems? Walgreens has problems." You were truly one of a kind, and I hope, some day, the stories I have written about Evergreen, you, and all the people there, will show what an amazing person you were and how you led an amazing place! May you rest in peace, Babe, with Mikey and Margie right there by your side!

On Behalf of the Blackburn Family of Burnham Illinois I would like to extend our sincere condolences to "Babe's" family. My grandfather was Arthur Blackburn. He was married to Julia, Babe's mother's sister. My father was Harry Blackburn of Burnham, and my Aunt was Shirley (Petrisha) Blackburn. Many more from Burnham I am sure would want me to extend condolences. I would have liked to have known Babe, but never had the opportunity, but heard she was a remarkable person with a good heart. Any family members interested in contacting me, or other family members may do so.

"Babe" was best friends with the late Father Bill Murphy. She was 10 years his senior and when he was a teenager he caddied at Evergreen. Through the years Babe regaled him with stories of Machine Gun Jack McGurn, his pals, and the beautiful Louise Rolfe, aka "the blonde alibi." Father Bill always golfed free at Evergreen and Babe was at all his jubilees. She had a front row seat at his funeral in 2009, and I'm sure he is driving her around heaven in a golf cart, showing her the sights.
Rest in peace, Miss Ahern.

Tim Ragen and I played many rounds of golf at Evergreen in the 70's and always looked forward to talking with Babe. She helped Tim with his swing (hook) and made him promise to work on it. We respected her business sense and the fact she saved that course. Bob Brooks

Aunt Babe,
I still remember the days of sledding & going to visit you at the clubhouse or the BIG E. for a sandwich & hot chocolate before walking home.
Between you, Gram,& mom,all of you made sure I would be the independant person I have become.
Thanks for everything, all my love,
Anne Marie

Growing up, my Best friend was Ann Fennel, her niece. We would visit her Aunt at the golf course and roam the kitchen & grounds. She had an excellent staff & I had my first taste of Lemon Meringue pie, made from scratch ofcourse. I recall Babe as being one of the most 'direct' & outspoken women I've met, to this day. She was well ahead of her time..Rest in peace, dear lady!

Against all the odds, your bravery shone through like a beacon of hope and inspiration to all of us who had the pleasure of calling you a friend.
This world is a much poorer place because of your passing.
Babe, you were one of a kind and a lot of fun to be around. You will be missed.

"Babe" was my lifeline into the Golf Business. Caddied for her when I was 12. Played Evergreen for many years until I moved South /East and worked in the Golf business for 45 years. Always had Babe & Margaret as my guests at the PGA Show in Florida, 1980 thru 1991. Great memories watching them walk the show floor, have dinner and go over her orders, putting them on a plane back to Scottsdale, AZ.
Every visit back to Chicago Babe was on my list. We would always have a drink: Babe a Courvoisier, I , a Jameson and talk about the Golf business. Lots of memories going back many years that will stay with me. Would like to have Golf Digest do a story on "Babe" and the history of Evergreen Country Club. I can help make the contacts.
All the Best to her family & friends, Pat OGrady

To my beloved Aunt Babe:
I will miss you very much.
Whenever I need strength, I think "What would Aunt Babe say or do" and it pulls me through.
You were a strong, but generous person in life. You were always willing to offer advice and knowledge of which you had plenty.

Babe was a very special lady who as the above mentions lived for golf. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her. I loved her stories about her life she was one of a kind. I wish her peace it was to bad she did not have much in later years. My fondest memory was when she won her case to keep the golf course as she rode in golf cart so happy she knew every blade of grass,I believe she did. God rest her soul.
