Alon Winnie Obituary

Winnie M.D., Alon P. Age 82 of Wilmette. Former husband of June Winnie; beloved father of Alon P. Winnie, Jr., Russell G. III (Cathie) Winnie and Debbie Winnie; proud grandfather of Alon P. Winnie, III, Lisa Evelyn Marie Winnie, Morgan M. Winnie and Devin E. Winnie and Russell G. Winnie IV; great-grandfather of Brooklyn D. Winnie; fond uncle of Scott and Brooke Stark. Alon Winnie grew up in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin with his father Russell "Russ" G. Winnie, a famous sportscaster and the original voice of the Green Bay Packers, a loving mother, Evelyn "Avie" and a brother, Griff. After graduation from Milwaukee Country Day School, he obtained his undergraduate degree from Princeton University. Princeton provided him the premedical courses required for medical school and, more importantly, provided him with the self-discovery essential to understanding one's role in life and equipping one to meet its challenges. The four years at Northwestern University Medical School furnished the knowledge necessary for a career in medicine, while the experience of medical school, enhanced by its unique extracurricular life, allowed Alon the opportunity to explore the world of music and verse and to establish friendships that would last a lifetime. After completing his residency training, Alon remained on the faculty at Cook County Hospital until 1972, when he accepted the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Illinois Medical Center, a position he would hold for seventeen years. In 1989 he became Director of the University of Illinois Pain Control Center, and in 1992 he was recruited to return to Cook County Hospital to become the Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management. Alon authored a textbook on "Plexus Anesthesia", which won the Anesthesia Foundation Award as the 1983-84 "Book of the Year". He served for five years as President of the Chicago Society of Anesthesiologists, one year as President of the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists, and five years as President of The American Society of Regional Anesthesia, which he and a small group of "founding fathers" organized in 1975. Alon served as the President of the Dannemiller Memorial Educational Foundation since its founding in 1984 following the death of his close personal friend, Dr. Joseph Dannemiller. Alon received many awards throughout his career including the Distinguished Service Award, the William O. McQuiston Award, the Ralph Waters Award, the Gaston Labat Award, the Ellis Gillespie Award, the Nils Lofgren Award, the Duncan H. C. Ferguson Memorial Award, the Francis "Joe" Dannemiller Memorial Award, the Bernard H. Eliasberg Medal, and the Karl Koller Gold Medal. Alon was a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology, with added qualifications in Pain Management, and a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists. He was a Fellow of the Faculty of Anesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the Faculty of Anesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons in England. When asked what he considered to be his greatest accomplishment in academic anesthesia, and the greatest reward, Dr. Winnie stated, "Categorically, the greatest accomplishment is the education and training of a multitude of young anesthesiologists," and he quickly added proudly, "All of whom have special skills in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Management. The greatest reward of academic anesthesia is unquestionably the multitude of friendships that one develops throughout the entire world." Visitation Thursday, January 22, 2015 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. at Old Orchard Rd., Skokie, IL 60077. Funeral Services Friday, January 23, 2015 at 12:00 Noon at Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Dr., Brookfield, WI 53005. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Post-Polio Health International, 4207 Lindell Blvd., #110, Saint Louis, MO 63108-2930. Info: 847-675-1990 or www.donnellanfuneral.com.

Condolences to the entire world he made better. A wonderful gentleman and a patient teacher. I was privileged to have attended a couple of his lectures. The highlight of his teaching was his Q&A sessions after the lectures, where he would stay until everyone had had a chance to benefit from his extensive experience, wisdom, and ability to explain plexus anesthesia. A giant, upon whose shoulders an entire profession stands.

The world of Anesthesia has lost a giant and I a friend and mentor. Few people know that Alon was responsible for my becoming President of the ASA in 1975.

Rest well my friend in God's keeping.

Little can be said that has not already … my heart aches.

Due largely to his landmark work and resolute willingness to share, the renaissance of regional anesthesia has allowed millions of people worldwide to experience pain-free surgery and recovery.

Early in my Navy anesthesia career, Dr. W inspired me to “know what you're doing … or don't do it!” I am fortunate to have enjoyed a long professional and personal friendship. Because of him, “son …” has special meaning. Peace, my friend.

My sincere condolences go to Alon' family from one who not only was privileged to have learned from and worked with over many years but also counted him as a wonderful and compassionate friend. His view on life and his poetry remain an indelible memory but his impact concerning Pain Management and Regional Anesthesia on thousands of aneshesiologists is an incredible legacy.

It was an honor to work with such an amazing man, a great anesthesiologist, teacher, and poet, an inspiration to all of us following g in his footsteps in regional anesthesia. We didn't always agree, but the discussions were always exciting! Thanks, Ken, for including all the pictures.

To the family: I'm kind of a shirt-tail relative. Alon was my sister Nancy's brother-in-law via Griff. I remember Alon at Country Day ... he was a freshman when I was a senior ... kid brother of my best friend at Brown and my Best Man Griff. He had an amazing life and career in spite of the challenges thrown his way. With your sorrow you should have an enormous amount of pride.
I am so sorry for your loss.

Alon, you were a beautiful friend! You truly experienced "life" in it's fullest meaning and capacity. You were"Love On Wheels" as Anis Baraka called you in the foreward to one of your books of poems. Remember the night we founded ASP (The Anesthesia Society of Poets!)? One of many nights spent sharing dreams, fables, and philosophies with you! You have written "Never Take a Rainbow for Granted" I won't!!! And now I'll always see you "wheeling" down the slope of one toward the pot of gold! See you there!

My condolences go out to the family.
I had the privilege of first meeting Alon in 1989 while still a student. He has been so kind-hearted.
To this day I still think of him whenever I see shingles or even hear the word -he has been one the biggest champions and thought-leaders for Pain Management. He has helped and will continue to help countless numbers of people directly , and indirectly into the future, through his role as an innovator and educator... What a Great Legacy!

Dr. Winnie,
He was my First teacher in Medical field and Anesthesia when I landed in Chicago in 1973 and has been my mentor for life time.
His way of looking at life and living is some thing to meditate upon and put in life. Besides being a great teacher he was great roll model, friend, father figure.
We will definitely miss him.

I first met Alon through his writings, specifically those on brachial plexus anatomy and block techniques, his expert insights turning my confused understanding into a clarity which produced clinical success. I met him in person a few years later at a very early meeting of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia (ASRA), and found a man generous not only with his great knowledge, but with his friendship, encouragement and poetry. Separated by the Atlantic and half a continent we met infrequently, but seeing him was always a delight and often led to an evening memorable for its food, wine and companionship, and for conversation ranging far beyond regional anesthesia. His work did much to promote this aspect of the specialty so the status it enjoys today marks him as one of the great men of modern anesthesiology. To have known him was an honour and a privilege, and receiving ASRA's Labat Award from his hands is a treasured experience. We shall all miss him, his family most of all, but everyone should take comfort from a life lived well.

I met Dr. Winnie in 1969, when I married the eldest child of his colleague and best friend, Dr. Vincent Collins. Alon was a clone of Vince regarding the breadth and depth of contribution to their profession. Either one could have made a ton more money had they gone into private
practice...both gave that option up to devote their lives to the training of future anesthesiologists and to relieving pain. Despite being wheelchair bound from polio, Alon always was in great spirits and always asked how I and my wife and kids were getting along. His life is testament to the strength we all possess but typically are not called upon to exercise...His dear wife June was/is a gentle and understanding soul who perfectly mirrored the love and compassion Alon exuded. Alon's legacy is alive and well and serving around the world in the lives of those he trained and patients, who have reaped the benefit of being tended to by the very best at their craft. I feel very fortunate to have been on the planet with him ... and his friend Vince.

You guided me, you taught me, you laughed with me, you ate with me, you drank with me, and you healed me. For not being my father, you certainly were one. I will always be blessed for having known you. You will always be one of my heroes. Thank you.

He was the greatest thinker in the history of regional anesthesia and pain management. Much more than that, he was the greatest humanitarian. His legendary passion for life and his work, and especially for his family, had no equal. The legacy he created; the lives he touched; the pathways he blazed, will persist ad infinitum.

God speed Alon. I feel honored and blessed to have lifted you up as you visited us many times at my father Vincent's home. We always awaited your arrival with great joy knowing the humor and wisdom you would bring. Now it's time for you to be lifted up again and revel with my father and mother at your legacies. Most of all June, you are a living angel to have put up with that loving curmudgeon - be well. With great memories.

Dr. Winnie is the best teacher I have known. He has compassion, patience, tolerance and knowledge of his art. He has a precious sense of humor that is so unique. Many Anesthesia residents who trained under him are now excellent Anesthesiologists, that will make his art and knowledge live on for many many years . It is an invaluable legacy to the practice of Anesthesia.
Thank you Dr. Winnie.
Our prayers go to your family at this sad and difficult time.

We really reconnected in the past two years, and I am so grateful. I remember him always as being so funny, making my mother laugh after her own tragedies, and being uncle to my brother and me as well as our younger siblings from Mom's second marriage. I love you, Uncle Alon, and although you will be missed, I'm glad you are at peace. Love to Russ, Alon and Debbie. Brooke

I only knew Alon briefly and intermittently through collaborations and professional meetings. However, when I think of all the people in my career who were directly influenced by Alon, through either his teachings, his mentorship, his leadership, and his friendship, I can't help but feel a deep respect for him. My condolences to his close friends and family for their loss at his passing. It is clear to me, though, that his legacy of being a good doctor, teacher, and a most of all, a kind man, will endure.

Dear Alon Winnie, you may have departed, but you will always be in my heart and soul. Ever since I met you in 1972, you became a mentor with a heavy combination of father figure and big brother to me. I was a young man with plenty of rough edges, but your magnetic personality and and exuberant wisdom had a magical effect on me. I loved working for you and learning from you.
Your best quality was the limitless kindness for the people in need and I witnessed, how many people you helped. You never hesitated to help any body who came to you, even though there always were people around you, who objected. But you persisted and prevailed. You helped people that you had never known before.
You put the fun in the specialty of regional anesthesia.
You took the specialty of Pain Medicine from infancy to adult age.
Your new techniques helped so many patients.
You were a inspirational speaker with touch of magic. You could have been a very successful snake oil seller, but thanks God you chose regional anesthesia and pain medicine.
God also gave you a gift of writing and you used it so effectively.

God Bless you
