Barbara Turf Obituary
Turf, Barbara Winnetka, IL. Barbara Turf, former CEO of Crate and Barrel, passed away surrounded by family and loved ones on July 12, 2014. Born February 28, 1943, in Chicago to Minnie and Angelo Dorini, an Italian immigrant family, Barbara was raised in little Italy with her sister Judy. Barbara attended St. Mary's High School in Chicago, before attending the University of Illinois, receiving a degree in education. Barbara married Robert Turf, a podiatric surgeon, in 1974; together they raised their three children in the northern suburbs. It wasn't long after graduating she walked into the first, and only, Crate and Barrel in Old Town. That day would change her life forever. Barbara played an integral role in the growth and success of Crate and Barrel. She was named President in 1986 and CEO in 2008. During her time with Crate and Barrel, she spearheaded the launch of CB2 in 2000, and introduced the children's retailer Land of Nod to the Crate and Barrel brand in 2001. "The world has lost not only a wonderful, creative force, but a woman of warmth charm and grace. She was a major influence on the aesthetic revolution in how Americans furnished their homes," said Gordon Segal, Founder of Crate and Barrel. Barbara would go on to change the business world as well as how we entertained in our homes. She was respected and admired by many in the housewares industry and received the Lifetime Humanitarian Award from the Housewares Foundation in 2010. Barbara retired after 40 years at Crate and Barrel in 2012, but continued as a member of the Board of Directors. Following her retirement from Crate and Barrel, Barbara started Turf International Development Group, a retail consulting business. In this role, she was able to work with many large retail companies across the world, all of them anxious to work with the woman that changed entertaining in the home. Barbara's love of travel was matched with her love of wine, food and shopping. She was a mother, sister, aunt, and a best friend and will be missed by many. Barbara is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert Turf; son, Ryan Turf with wife, Jessica and their two daughters, Sienna and Dylan; son, Andrew Turf; daughter, Anne Watson (nee Turf) with husband, Ryan Watson. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday morning July 17, 10:00 a.m., Saints Faith, Hope and Charity Catholic Parish, 191 Linden St., Winnetka, IL. The family will be available at the church to greet friends of Barbara starting at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9900 Gross Point Road, Skokie, IL. In lieu of flowers, people are invited to make a donation to University of Chicago Initiative on Pancreatic Cancer - Medicine and Biological Sciences Development, 130 East Randolph Street, Suite 1400, Chicago, IL 60601, in memory of Barbara Turf. Arrangements by Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home, 847-251-8200.
