A girl's glasses flew off by the beaming dodgeball. I witnesses soft comforting words "you're be ok Eva". Then the firm egging us boys to partner with the pretty girls during friday awkward dances. One lunch volleyball practice I walked into gym and sat down near side of the wall, plopped on the floor all alone a distance away from the 7th grader group, and my 8th grade group across gym floor all in circle. (had a personal home matter clouding me) I got called the next second to approach the teacher table - I sat relieved on a chair next to other side of the table from him. Thank you Mr Benson for caring, '78.

Dodge ball with Mr. Benson was the best. He was playful and called me Martin (my brother's name) instead of Susan. I remember how intently he would watch a baseball game or a volleyball game. You'd think he'd have been bored having seen so many each day. He truly enjoyed the kids and we enjoyed him. He knew every student's name and could tell you something about them. Years later, I visited Kilmer and he remembered me and my brothers. Just a great guy.

My condolences to Mr. Benson's family and friends. He was an inspiration to all teachers, he challenged us and cared for us. He made us feel unique and capable. He instilled the ability to play hard, compete but always be fair and a supportive teammate and good sport. Our friendships were bonded in his presence and with his supportive hand. He will always be remembered by his students at Kilmer with great admiration and affection.

Dear Benson family: Mr. Benson was indeed one of the beloved figures of our youth. In addition to his professional stance as an educator, he was that rare individual who possessed a personal touch that resonated with all who encountered him. By that I mean while he was in charge of a multitude of students, he nonetheless managed to foster a personal relationship with each one. I know that he was always friendly to me and I never forgot that. May he rest in peace knowing his was a life and a career well done!
