Beverly Gavin

Gavin, Beverly Beverly Gavin was a visionary leader who used her experience with breast cancer as a stimulus for disseminating information on the devastating effect of breast cancer in the African American community. Beverly and Gwen Wesley (deceased), both breast cancer survivors, organized an affiliate Chapter of Sisters Network, Inc. (Houston, TX) in Chicago, IL in 2000. Beverly has led members in carrying out the National Mission of "Stop the Silence" through providing community awareness programs such as Block Walks, Health fairs, Fashion Show Luncheons, and the Pink Ribbon Project; collaborating with breast cancer organizations and universities' community-based breast cancer programs; working with churches and community based organizations on improving access to breast cancer screening and follow-up care; participating in breast cancer research studies; and presenting an exhibit on "the Journey of Chicago Chapter Breast Cancer Survivors." Beverly ended her 15 years fight with breast cancer on April 5, 2013. She is survived by her husband, Dwayne; her daughter, Dora; her son, Eric (all of Chicago); and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Lights of Zion MB Bible Church, 11636 S. Halsted St., Chicago, IL 10:00 AM-12:00 noon. Visitation on Friday, April 12, 2013, 6:00-9:00 PM.
