Batko, Anthony J."Tony" 81, passed away on January 11, 2013. Son of the late Anthony A. and Frances nee Duratinksy Batko; cherished husband of Alice Schreyer Batko and the late Susan nee Boyle Batko; beloved father of Ann Batko and Ellen (Rich) Nolan; adoring grandfather of Maclean, Nora, Evan, and Lucy. Tony was a graduate of Northwestern University and served for three years as an Air Force pilot. He was the founding president of Vocab Incorporated, a publisher and developer of educational materials. Tony was a lifelong Chicagoan devoted to civic improvement, serving on the boards and as president of the Chicago-Valentine Boys & Girls Clubs and the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs; 12 years with the Citizens Committee for Employment, for which he interviewed prisoners about to be released for possible employment; a six-year term on the Riverside, Illinois, Library Board as an elected member; and co-chair of the Chicago Public Library Group, which formed a coalition that stopped the City of Chicago from putting the central library in an abandoned department store and influenced the building of a new facility, the Harold Washington Library. Tony was a past president of the Union League Club of Chicago and the Chicago Literary Club, and a past director of the Caxton Club of Chicago. Visitation Thursday, January 17, 2013, 4:00 pm until time of service 8:00 pm at Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd. at Old Orchard Rd., Skokie. Interment Private. He was a supurbly well prepared and articulate speaker. He addressed the Caxton Club on the Chicago Public Library battle of the 1980s, and again last year about his friendship with professor Bergen Evans of Northwestern University.
