Hughes, Jr., John Wilden born on February 18, 1950 in Michigan, died suddenly of a heart attack while taking a morning walk on a trip in Manhattan to visit family. The date was August 6th. A self-made man whose career began as an advertising copywriter in Chicago, his work as a screenwriter, producer and director on such films as The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Home Alone helped launch countless careers and revealed to a global audience the humor, sensitivity and nuances of everyday people in the suburbs of Chicago. In the last decade, he stepped back from the legacy he created to enjoy time with his family, maintain a functioning farm in northern Illinois and support independent arts. While the impact of his work and philanthropy were felt internationally, he focused intensely on local interests, including the planting of a half-million trees in McHenry County and the funding of medical research through Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Nancy; two sons, John Wilden III and James Warren; and four grandchildren, Katelyn Rose, John Wilden IV, Livia Brynn and Henry Paul. He was a proud resident of Northbrook, Glencoe, Northfield, Harvard and Lake Forest, where he lived since 1988. A private service will be held at Wenban Funeral Home in Lake Forest on Tuesday, August 11th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association, 208 S. LaSalle St. Ste 1500, Chicago, IL 60604-1242 and the Northwestern University School of Medicine, Arthritis Research Fund, 300 E. Superior St., Lurie Building, 7th Floor, Chicago, Illinois 60611. Info: 847-234-0022.

Thank You for the most memorable movies that seemed to have been circled around the time I was at GBN from 1981 -1985. When I graduated from GBN the following year you started filming Ferris Buellers Day Off. I was an extra in that movie who actually got paid. That is something I will remember forever. Thank You for sharing our stories with the rest of the country. RIP

Mr. Hughes, thank you for portraying our city, Chicago, in a positive light on film. Thank you for capturing the youth of Generation X on film. Lastly, thank you for planting those thousands of trees that you did. That is your greatest legacy to our world. Godspeed, sir.

Your movies are something special, they stand the test of time. You got me through high school... As I sit here and watch Breakfast Club, remembering the first time I ever saw it-- just eleven years old, all by myself in a very dark farmhouse, way after midnight, the kids all asleep-- I think of the ways you touched my life. The ways you shaped me.
Thank you for being the man you were... thank you for everything. For giving me someone to identify with. For trying to teach me, regardless how hard it was to see, that high school was always going to be a drag for everyone. (;
Much love, Mr. Hughes. Much love.

This is a tribute and a thanks for a type of healing connected to Home Alone,
I have anxiety disorder and at different times have panic episodes. This year, I got Home Alone recorded on my DVR and when my dog passed in 2009 I just couldn't take it. Over the summer, I guess I started watching Home Alone once a week! Now in November, I have found that watching the movie, especially the scene inside the church with music, stops the panic and lowers my heart rate! Whatever it is, I am grateful, something is there maybe it is John's love or spirit?? Thanks John for making all these movies, they are solace to the heart and mind for me.

John Hughes' teen movies made a difference in my life just when I was at an age when I was trying to find and define who I was. Simplified morals for teenagers, The Breakfast Club gave you a chance to try on a few personalities as the film drew them together and discounted the differences...
So now I work in film, and one of my dreams is to make a John Hughes (style) teen movie in the hope it may be the defining 90 minutes of other struggling teens one day.
Respect, Mr Hughes, and thank you.

Hello John, I discovered you in the mid 90's as a lonely teen watching television growing up in London. Your movies and your voice spoke more to me then others. I sit here trying to write my first feature film and I am at a crisis point in my life. Not knowing who I am or what. I just watched 'She's Having A Baby' and it brought tears to my eyes. This time however I noticed something that I hadn't before. I realized just how close I am to the Alec Baldwin character. I wonder how the character progressed and what caused him to change? And even if that character was you at a certain point in your life? One thing is for sure though. I really miss you man and that voice of yours many of us search for. Thank you John and god bless you. A friend.

For John...
WEEP NOT FOR ME
Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.
Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.
I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.
Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...

Mr Hughes, During the 80's and 90's I needed your movies. They were there for me when others were not. I had a tough time and the love and humour in your movies made me laff and cry. They also made me want to write screenplays I must have written 10 after watching your movies. Unfortunately my dreams have yet to come to fruition I'm a 9-5 office worker but I will get there. I want to be the guy who writes some films to define my generation I'm 31 so I figure I have a bit of time yet. I'm english with a typical English sense of humour and I feel I'm very quick witted and a lot of this comes from all the suttle jokes in your films that you can spot and the slapstick bits. I see your influence everywhere from Family Guy to The Big Bang Theory. I hope that it helps your family in some way that you were so widely adored and can see your influence in most sitcoms and films from the 90's onwards. Thank you so much!

I grew up in Grosse Pointe City and remember John from playing Little League Baseball for one, possibly two years in the minor leagues. I grew up on Washington Road, right next to Rivard Blvd. I remember we were both geeks and terrible baseball players, not that there is anything wrong with that! : > ) We were not friends, unfortunately, just acquaintances. I enjoyed his movies greatly and I believed that his childhood experiences and background gave him great insight into people's character and feelings. Great guy, RIP.

Although this is late in being posted, I have been thinking about this since Johns death. I loved his movies. Growing up in the 80's, I watched his movies over and over and they continue to be a touchstone for me. It doesn't seem right that I now live in a world where John is no longer. In 2001 we moved away from the North Shore for a while. I was able to say that we had lived where they shot Uncle Buck and Sixteen Candles and HOME ALONE (and there actually WAS an outdoor skating rink set up in the park during winter break) and then everyone had an idea of where we came from. In those years away from Chicago, I could not watch Ferris Bueller without crying from homesickness. Thank you, John, for the images that still mean so much to our family.
And yes, every January we ask my husband if he got "jelly of the month" for his bonus.

in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.
Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.
Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Rest in peace, Mr. Hughes. Your movies made it easier to be a teenager in the 80s. Your legacy of laughter will never be forgotten.

Nancy & family- As a former classmate of yours, I want you to know how much you 2 were thought about at our recent 40th GBN reunion. Who could have known that in a few days following, we would hear the news of Johns' passing. My heart & prayers go out to you and all in the family. John left a legacy that you should be proud of and his work impacted millions. Peace and love, Shelley (Waidner) Kleypas

My heart goes out to Mr. Hugh's family and friends. I am sorry for your loss. I have never written on a guest book of someone I never knew personally, but as one of John Hugh's many fans I felt compelled to say I am just glad I got to know a glimpse of his sense of humor and talent by seeing every one of the movies he directed and wrote. I still own several of them and no other director's movies have truly touched and influenced so many people in such a way. His insights and honest portrayal of real life on the big screen time and time again are second to none. Thanks for countless laughs, hilarious quotes and wonderful characters. I'll miss them all.

A great Chicago guy. Northwest side and a Taft H.S. kid. Wonderful to see a local boy make good. Thanks John for giving me and countless others so many laughs. Thanks for allowing us to just sit back and forget our troubles. You retired too soon and left us way too soon. Thanks John.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of this man who meant so much to me during our Leo Burnett days. I was John's secretary during his time at Leo B, and what a crazy fun time we all had. I will always remember the one-on-one conversations we shared & all the loony-ness he brought to our creative group. One of my fondest memories is the day his first child was born.....you'd think he was the "only" person who had ever had a child born to themself. Listening to him boast about this feat, you truly believed that he had truly invented the miracle of birth. Thank you John for the fun memories. May you be at peace.
