Coon, Harry - Palos Verdes Peninsula
Coon, Harry Harold Passed away peacefully at his home in Glenview, Illinois, on November 29, 2014 at age 92. A memorial service was held for Mr. Coon on June 23, 2015 at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, Illinois. Harry Coon was born on June 23, 1922, the son of Louise Dowdell Walker and Harry H. Walker. After his natural father died due to injuries suffered in World War I and after his mother married Owen L. Coon in May, 1930, Harry Coon became the adopted son of Owen Coon and his name was changed to Harry Harold Coon. Harry Coon graduated from the Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan,in 1940 and entered Northwestern University. However, his love for music and then World War II intervened. He served in the U.S. Navy Band in Yorktown, Virginia, during World War II. Harry Coon married Alma Seippel, of Evanston, Illinois, in March 1944 and they had a wonderful marriage of 60 years. During his life, Harry Coon worked with his father Owen Coon at General Finance Corporation (1945-1948), and then at CBS from the late 1940's through the mid 50's. This segued into the burgeoning commercial music business working out of his home studio in Glenview. He and Alma Coon owned and operated a radio station in St. Louis, Missouri, during the late 1960's, which he sold. Returning to his home in Glenview, Harry Coon continued his own music business in the 1970's and 1980's. Harry Coon was President of the Owen L. Coon Foundation (which his father had established in 1946) from 1961 until 1991. During his tenure, the Foundation contributed substantially to both Northwestern University and to Evanston Hospital (now NorthShore University HealthSystem). Harry and Alma Coon both loved Williamsburg. During the 1970's they purchased a home ("Seven Springs") in the Williamsburg area that had originally been built in 1732. They restored the home to its colonial tradition (but with modern conveniences). Several years ago, Harry Coon donated the home to the Williamsburg Foundation. Harry and Alma Coon also donated their substantial collections of silver, pottery and porcelain to Williamsburg and their extensive collection of Audubon prints to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
