Elroy Sandquist Obituary

Sandquist III, Elroy "Sandy" C. Was born October 19, 1953 in Chicago to the late Elroy and Sally, (nee Dunham), Sandquist. He went home to the Lord after a brief illness, on Saturday, July 6, 2013 in the loving arms of his wife and daughters, surrounded by family and dear friends. Sandy was the beloved husband of Colleen Sandquist, (nee Molohon), and dear father to Kylen and Kara Sandquist; He is also survived by his siblings, Deirdre, Ellen, and Peter Sandquist; his parents-in-law Patrick and Peggy Molohon; his sisters-in-law Carolyn (Frank) Schiefelbein, Cathy (Joe) D'Alessandro and Courtney (Dennis) Bond; dear uncle to many; and countless friends whose lives he touched in many ways throughout his life. Sandy was a proud graduate of Francis W. Parker School, Brown University, and Northwestern University School of Law. In addition to his law practice, Sandy graced the stage as a musician, songwriter, actor, and most recently the founder of the Fremont Street Theater Company, a 501(C) 3 organization. He was an active member of Holy Family Parish in Inverness where his beautiful, rich voice brought inspiration to all. Visitation 3-8 PM Thursday and 9:00 to 10:00AM Friday at Holy Family Catholic Community, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness, IL following with Mass at 10:30AM. Interment St. Michael the Archangel, Palatine, IL. Sandy's dream was to further the arts for children and the community. In lieu of flowers and in support of Sandy's love of the arts, donations can be made to the Fremont Street Theater Company, 800 E. NW Hwy, Ste. 960, Palatine, IL 60067. (Better yet, come see his next show "The Drowsy Chaperone" in August at Cutting Hall in Palatine.) As Sandy would say, "The show must go on!" for Elroy Sandquist

Not sure what to say?

It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since dear Sandy passed. He was such a wonderful and giving person. AND - he LOVED to sing! I remember speaking to him several times in the short time he was sick and passed. I was honored to be able to accompany Sandy several times, and also sing with him. I believe he is now singing with the angels. May he continue to RIP

I was a good friend of Sandys as he gave me the courage at the time to be a music Cantor at Holy Family Church. He always told me to pray the words. He said you know how to sing. He also invited myself and Jil my wife to his theater company as well as he got me started in Community Theater in Bye Bye Birdie. I have made such great friends in theater and throughout because of him. He changed my life so much I am better for knowing him. I also got to golf with him, and was invited to go see Oliver his favorite play with him and Colleen his wife. I misss him so much everyday.

Dearest Colleen, Kylen & Kara,

Chris & I were saddened to find out last night that your precious husband & father, Sandy, passed away in July. We are sending our deepest sympathies to you, Kylen & Kara. You and Sandy had one of those rare Catholic marriages that was a shining light to the rest of us. Both of you are beautiful people.

Dear Kylen & Kara, He may have left this world, but he hasn't left you. Your father taught you to have faith in God by the way he lived his life. Hang onto your faith and you will find that there will come a day when you think of your father and instead of tears, there will be a smile on your face from knowing his love for you and for the memories.

Sandy took a piece of your hearts with him on July 6, but he left his deep love for the three of you in its place.

I can just imagine Jesus meeting Sandy at the gates of Heaven and saying to him “Well done son, well done!”

In faith & love,
Chris & Margie Veit

To Sandy's family, I wish you peace that will come. There is such a paradox here. The memories you have had are the basis for your grief. These same memories will also be a source of your healing... some time later. My wife and I are members at HF. While I had only spoken to Sandy once to thank him for his gift, his talent, when I bought his CD, I found him to be someone I wish I knew better. Reading many of the earlier entries, I can see how he touched many people. I will listen to his CD with a different ear, and a nod to heaven. Peace to all of you.

Dear Colleen, Kylen and Kara. I am so sorry for your loss, and glad that you were blessed by the constant presence of Sandy in your life. His joy and love for you all was so good. I am so glad that he found his way to your loving arms. He was my oldest friend in the world. We met before we were in elementary school. Who knows how. Getting on Ravenswood El to go to Wrigley Field. Childhood memories. And here we were. 50+ years later. Still friends. Me coming to visit after Thanksgiving when he would be putting the lights up for Christmas. Dear memories I will cherish. Rest in Peace my friend. We sure had some good memories. I feel blessed to have been your friend for so long. Love you. To Deirdre, Peter and Ellen, we too share so many memories from long ago. I am so sorry for your loss. Sandy was a great friend.

Sandy was able to share his hard-earned wisdom and compassion through his sonorous voice and the ol' Guild guitar which I so fondly remember as I lie here in bed this still Maine morning with my wife, Beda, listening intently to my “musical buddy's” passionate singing and music. Sandy found love and contentment during his lifetime in his Spiritual Quest, family, many friends, and a six-string.
Peace, Love, & Music to all who were fortunate enough to experience Sandy, especially Colleen, Kylen, and Kara.

Sandy was a Fine Man!. I knew Sandy when he helped me to get back my Driver License, about fifteen years ago, back then I just knew how good he was, he was a fine, Smart and, honest lawyer, he really was a fine class act the real deal! I guess God needed a Fine Attorney up there. My thoughts and prayers go out to Colleen, Kylen, Kara, family members and friends.

I got to know Sandy my freshman year at Brown. Being a year ahead of me he was someone I both looked up to and emulated. Nobody was cooler than Sandy. We shared a love for music that grew into a shaggy playing partnership. A few years later, both of us in Chicago, we would hit the open mics at any folk club that would let us up on stage. One song that we played and sang together was (I think) called "Let It Shine." Sandy would kill that song every time. He'll be missed. Let it shine Sandy, let it shine.

EC3 made my life more interesting from my first day as a fellow Clark Street Cafe barman, through late night air guitar performances, philosophical meanderings, and finally as my lawyer. Geography and life separated us some years ago, but I will always consider him a treasured friend. He was finest kind. To his family as you work through the grief, I hope you find some solace in the fact that while he was with us, he made living better for a lot of people. RIP.

Sandy never knew my last name, but knew me by sight and greeted me each time we met at Holy Family in the past decade or so. He was a true example of the hands and feet of Jesus on earth. I can only imagine the joy with which Sandy was greeted in heaven and know that it is contrasted with the sorrow of those left on earth. Sandy truly made a difference in so many lives and will continue to do so through his family. May the Lord comfort you until you meet again. Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded- Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Colleen,
While words can't replace the gift that Sandy was to you, your girls and to your entire family, trust in your faith and rely on your friends during this difficult time. With love, Margaret (Mueller) Papas

"Each man's life touches so many other lives." This was certainly true of Sandy. I knew him only a relatively short time, and yet, he made me feel like part of his family. He was a man of immense talents, which were exceeded only by his heart. Knowing Sandy made me a better theatre person, and moreso, a better person. While I know his energy and kindness and passion for theatre and music will live on in his wonderful family and in the many people whose lives he touched in his short time with us, he will be sorely missed. I will always remember him and be so thankful for his presence and influence in my life.

Shortly after moving to Chicago, while studying with Del Close at Second City, one of the people I met was this nice guy, Elroy Sandquist III. The first night he asked a few people to go for a drink after class, later, Sandy wanted to go somewhere else. I went along, and when we walked into the Clark Street Cafe, it was like walking into Cheers with Norm! Hands went up and I kept hearing people say Sandy! and greet him warmly. It was always like that around him. We became good friends. Sorry Palatine, but I'll always remember Sandy as Mr. Chicago. He seemed to know everybody, and everybody liked Sandy! So many doors opened for me and I met so many great people through him. From his welcoming and fantastic mom and dad, the rescued dogs, his just as warm and friendly sibs, Deirdre, Peter and Ellen, and great friends. He married this really sweet girl from the burbs ;-) and raised two beautiful girls. While our lives grew separated by life and distance, me living on Oregon, I loved knowing what was going on with him, with his finding singing again, the theater and hearing about family. Though our distance now grows infinite, my life is so much better for knowing Sandy. Enjoy heaven my friend.

Colleen and family, Our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies. We were blessed to know Sandy in recent years, but we heard his amazing voice long before. You are wonderful people and we only wish we had become friends earlier! Sandy was kind, fun, generous, talented, compassionate, sincere. The list could go on. It is obvious he touched many lives and those at Holy family, in the theatre community and elsewhere loved and respected him. Our daughter Megan remembers how welcoming he was when she was briefly in the choir, before college scheduling made continuing impossible. He will be missed!

Sandy... you were too good to go so soon. You led by example and helped make this world a better place. You will always be remembered. I have listened to your CD the last few days as a way of connecting with you, and I think I will be listening to it quite a bit in the weeks and months ahead. Thank you for sharing your many gifts with us and for being a "genuine" and down-to-earth person. That's who you were. A role model for us all. We will miss you but will always remember you for the good things you did. You have gone home... to be with the "young-ins" in God's family. My heart goes out to Sandy's family; what a huge loss. He was a fine human being, friendly to all, and a so much fun.
In high school, "American Pie: was about probably his favorite song:

And I knew if I had my chance,
That I could make those people dance,
And maybe they'd be happy for a while.

I remember the e-mail I received from him telling about the opening of the Fremont Street Theater. I am happy to read that the "show will go on."
Colleen, you and your family are in my prayers.

I was so sorry to hear of Sandy's sudden passing. I knew him professionally and personally for many years. He was someone who cared deeply about his clients and always fought hard for them.

He was a rare breed. He was always inquisitive, learning and had a wonderful demeanor and disposition. I am going to miss him. My thoughts and condolences are with his family.

He was a great guy.

Colleen, Kylen, and Kara,
My heart broke for you when I heard the news about your beloved husband and dad. Although I only met Sandy a couple of times, I could feel the love he had for you each time I met him. I clearly remember the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eye after watching the Palatine musical, 13, this winter. Anyone near him could tell how proud he was of your beautiful daughter's performance in it. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Wishing you peace during this most difficult time, Sue Poklop
