Eugene Marino Obituary

Marino, Eugene Frank 90 of Huntley died peacefully, December 29, 2012 at Central DuPage Hospital. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:30am, Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church-10307 Dundee Road, Huntley. The family will greet friends from 9:30 until the time of Mass at Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Pancreatic Cancer Research Foundation in memory of his beloved daughter, Peggy. Eugene Frank Marino was a lucky man, and he would tell you so. Surrounded by his wife, Babe (Marie), their six children, 13 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, he would have a tear in his eye when he said, "How lucky can one guy be?" Gene was an ordinary man with extraordinary talents. Born October 14, 1922, he was a member of what is called the Greatest Generation. As a youth, he lived through the Great Depression, nurtured by his parents, Frank and Emily, along with his brothers, Bill and John. He was called upon by his country to serve as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army and joined his brothers-in-arms in the Pacific, where he earned the Bronze Star for meritorious service in a combat zone. Gene came home from the war with a strong work ethic that he later would pass on to his children. He worked first as private secretary to the vice president of the Canadian National Railroad. He then built and operated liquor stores, most noteworthy Mars Liquors, where Gene worked with his brother, Bill, for 30 years. Later in life, Gene took his sales talents to the real estate business, making friends and satisfied clients. And in his final years, Gene may have realized a true calling to politics when he became president of the Arcadia Condo Association at Sun City in Huntley serving as president from 2002-2008. Most of all, Gene was a family man. In his 90 years, he was happiest when surrounded by family members. He was most satisfied with a house full of children, talk and laughter. He later welcomed to his family numerous daughters-in-law and sons-in-law, and he would graciously expand membership to friends. Gene warmly offered love to his family and friends. It came back to him in full from all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by many. Gene is survived by his wife, Marie Marino; his children, Jeanne Marie Dalgety, Richard (Janis) Marino, Elizabeth (Gavin) Maliska, Jim (Karen) Marino, Connie (John) Tyrrell; his 18 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; his son-in-law, Charlie Poppell; he is also survived by many nieces, nephews and his cousin, Dr. Gerald Petrone. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Marino; his two brothers and their spouses, Bill and Dolores, John and Chris and by his son-in-law, David Dalgety. I only knew of Eugene from the times I was privileged to be at events with some of his family. Their love and laughter were more than enough to realize what a remarkable aura he had established among them all, especially his beloved Peggy. It's strange how such brief encounters can become lasting memories. Eugene's family, his legacy, did that for me. Thank you, sir.
