Edward Herter Obituary

Herter, Edward E. A longtime resident of Arlington Heights and lifelong resident of Illinois, passed away suddenly at Northwest Community Hospital, at the age of 90, on Saturday, December 30, 2017, after a brief illness. Edward was born in Chicago, and as he liked to tell people, it was "the year Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic." that was in 1927. On November 6th of that year, Edward and Elsa (nee Milbrandt) Herter and sister, Virginia (Johnston), welcomed a son, and baby brother. Edward spent most of his childhood working on the family mushroom farm in Villa Park, IL. He attended York High School and then attended and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1951 where he majored in journalism. Edward married Hazel (nee Jarvi) in 1954 and they celebrated 55 years of marriage before her passing in 2009. During their life together, they celebrated the births of two sons, Christopher E. (Laura Sullivan) and Craig A. (Evelyne), and his granddaughters Maija and Elisa. Edward warmly welcomed Stephanie, Aleece, and Kristen Sullivan (children of Laura Sullivan) and Joan Henning (dear friend/companion) into the Herter family. And, lest we forget his beloved granddog, Wolfgang. Edward retired from the Chicago Sun-Times in 1986 after more than three decades of service. During his retirement years, Edward found happiness in restoring an old farmhouse in Ontario, Wisconsin, where he also grew shallots and apples, and sold them at the farmers market. He loved telling jokes that would make you groan. Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Elsa, and beloved wife Hazel. He is survived by his sister Virginia, sisters-in-law Dorothy and Nancy, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m., followed by a Memorial Service from 11:00 a.m. 12:00 Noon, at Faith Lutheran Church, 431 S. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, IL 60005. Edward will be interned with Hazel at Hilltop Rest Cemetery in Ontario, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 431 S. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, IL 60005. Info (847)253-0224 or www.Meadowsfh.com

Not sure what to say?

To The Herter Family, My name is Diane Zuber and my husband Tom. We met Ed at Manor Care Nursing Home after my mom's stroke. She was roommates with Hazel. Ed was such a witty and great conversationalist. We have kept in contact over the last 10 years and we always remember his birthday and we call. We got together to eat right after his 90th at Rose Garden in Elk Grove. Ed and Tom would repeat lines from the movie Fargo which they both loved. When we called his phone this year and it was disconnected I found this website. We are deeply saddened by the belated news but wanted to say if the family gets notified of this entry that Ed was a wonderful person that loved his wife, devoted to being at the nursing home every day. We spend a lot of time in meals with my mom and dad, who was born the same month and year as Ed. I feel a great loss of knowing he's not with us anymore but great hope that we will see him again. God bless you.

We are so sad to hear of Ed's passing. He was a beloved cousin to our mom and visited her faithfully to the end. He was always so kind, funny and interesting....a true gentleman. I'm sure there is a Herter reunion in Heaven. Deepest condolences to Chris, Craig, Virginia and their families.

We were saddened and so surprised to read of Ed's death. He kept in touch with a phone call each Christmas and regularly visited our Mom, his cousin, when she was alive. Many memories of the Villa Park and Addison years and the family reunion picnics in Lombard. Love to the Herter family with our condolences.

Even though we are no longer next door neighbors to Ed, Hazel, Chris and Craig, we still remember the fun times we had together. Ed's witty jokes and tales of life experiences will remain with us. And we shall not forget our hysterical family trip to Macks Cafe at Eds recommendation. Bob and I will miss his periodic phone calls and emails. Rest in peace, Ed,in the care of our loving Father.

We were lucky to live next door to the Herters for forty years! We really enjoyed our many Saturday morning chats at our kitchen table! Rye goat & coffee was on the menu! Ed, would say no big breakfast, PLEASE. Phi & Ed could talk all day about their many sales stops , downtown.,near north & south! Herters took part in some of our family functions, especially , the graduations of the six O'Grady Kids. Not to mention the many, everyday backyard conversations! We will sure miss you, neighbor! RIP, Ed or as Phil called you, Eddie! Our sincere sympathy go out to all the Herters! Many Hugs to Chris & a Craig, their families & the Grandchilren!
Love Always

To the entire Herter family. I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Herter for all but 3 of my 9 years at the Sun-Times. I worked in Automotive National for Bill Podkulski and Norm Rosinski, eventually I was promoted to Mr. Dan O'Day's secretary after Jean Parker, who has been advised of her old boss's passing, and he was such a nice man. I still remember him and little Steve who sat near each other making their coffee downstairs. His job was not easy one, numbers basically all day long, lineage, commissions, etc. I can tell you he was a dream boss for Jean and all of us liked him. I am very sorry for your loss. He was one of a kind.
