I knew Kevin from the neighborhood, growing up at 38th and kedzie. Kevin's life mirrows my own life. I also attended Kelly high at the same time Kevin did. I played a lot of ball back then, sometimes against Kevin. Tremendous pitcher! I was considered a very good hitter back then, but I was no match for Kevin.struck me out 4 straight times. I also ran numbers for the local bookie, played many times at Burroughs, drank in the same bar on 35th and California. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers. I am truly sorry for his family, but I hope you find solace in his legacy. Sincely, John Holtz [email protected]

Tommy - I was shocked to see Kevin had passed away. Over the years my family would try to follow what Kevin was doing. It was fun to see him make the big leagues and become an actor! I remember him pitching for the Foxes in Appleton, WI and your whole family would come and watch. Your family was so proud of him. He was a very nice guy and would do anything to help someone out. Please accept my late condolences. Hope all is well with you and your family.

Dawn and I considered Kevin Hickey our friend. I played on White Sox fantasy camp for three years with him, he and Jim Fregosi were our managers for the first year. Some great times in those fantasy camps with Kevin, having a laugh over a couple of beers. He pitched to me a few times in the last year, and I asked him to throw me a real fastball. And he did. I barely saw it, let alone hit it. He laughed and told me once "pitching batting practice is a great job for me, serving up meatballs to hitters!" That's typical Kevin. He was a neighborhood kid who ended up fulfilling a dream.

Dawn said a few days ago that Kevin was the most approachable person she knows in the White Sox organization, he had no pretense and was genuinely interested in what you had to say when you spoke to him. I couldn't agree more.

Meatballs, huh? Here is how some 3,000 hit club members did lifetime against Kevin Hickey:

- George Brett, 0 for 15
- Wade Boggs, 1 for 11
- Paul Molitor, 1 for 7
- Cal Ripken, Jr, 1 for 6
- Rod Carew, 1 for 5
- Carl Yastrzemski, 0 for 2

I liked Kevin, and I'll really miss seeing him at the ballpark and saying hi.

My deepest sympathies to Kevin Hickey's family and friends. I was the president of his fan club back in the 80's White Sox days. He was very sweet, writing me back when I wrote a letter to him and he always would sit down with a stack of pictures to autograph for me to hand out to his fan club members. When I was in college and broke, he autographed pictures that I sold to fans so I could buy school supplies & books, or pay the bills at home since we were struggling. Kevin was more than a ball player to me back then...he was a wonderful man too, who probably didn't realize his autographed pictures helped keep a roof over the head of a struggling family and helped a girl through college. RIP Kevin.

Kevin,
You, Bucky and your parents always called me Earl and I never knew why, hell I don't think your parents ever knew my name was Phil. I fondly remember playing catch with you and Bucky in the alley and running errands to the fruit stand or Murrays for your mom. You were an inspiration to me as someone who lived out his dreams because you were willing to work harder than anyone else. I never was able to live out my dream of following in your footsteps and being the 2nd guy from Burroughs playground to pitch for the Sox but Thank You for letting me be a little part of your dream. You will never know the impact you had on my life but I will never forget. One of my greatest regrets is losing touch with you and your family after I moved out of the neighborhood. It was always great seeing at games and I will always remember our talk before game 4 in Anaheim in 2005. Heaven gained a true character and fighter this week. God Bless you and your family.

The Wilk family of Sarasota and Chicago offers its deepest sympathy and condolences to Kevin's family and friends. We lived 2 doors away from his Auntie Jean on Merrimac in Chicago before moving down to Florida. When Kevin was with the White Sox he played pitcher and catcher with the kids on the street on our front lawns. He always had time and something for the kids. In later years, he always found away to get me a ball at a ballgame no matter what stadium I was at in the USA and I been at a lot of them regardless of coaching or playing. One of the best moments with Kevin was in Houston Game 4 of the World Series. He had Houston police and Ushers stop me from going to the washroom and dinner since he wanted to give a ball and take a picture with me. We flew in from Chicago. He thought the occasion was significant and thought the White Sox would win that day and they did.

Again, get ready to pitch in Heaven. You are the best!!!!!!!!!!!

I first met Kevin in 1975, Marshalltown, Iowa, the 16" National softball tournament. It was Danans vs the Strikers, the defending champs. I can remember as if it was yesterday, Kevin was playing centerfield, we were down by a run and we had two men on base. I hit the ball over Kevin's head, all of us scored and we had defeated the defending champs. But...
The past 4 years, my daughter and I traveled to Arizona to watch the Sox train. Every year, I'll find Kevin and yell to him.. "Kevin. 1975, Marshalltown, Iowa!" His big smile and a thumbs-up always had us laughing. Next year, I will miss Kevin. Although, we are not mutual friends, I feel that he is a friend to me.
RIP, Kevin. Our Sox world has lost a great individual, gone, but never forgotten.
