We grew up together. Jim Dwyer went to Leo H.S., I went to Tilden Tech. Neither of us was a first-string football or basketball player. But we were better-than-average sandlot athletes. Jim excelled at drop-kicking a football, a lost art. Jim excelled academically, too -- at DePaul, from which we both matriculated after WWII. He was a school principal for 20 years, and worked at a second and third job to support his large family. Among them was the position of village trustee in Oak Lawn. Jim Dwyer was a true Irish-Catholic to the end. It was a pleasure to have known him, growing up in Englewood on the south side of Chicago. His like will not soon pass by again.
