I got the chance to wait on him and his wife at a restaurant in Orange Beach, AL. I introduced myself and he came right back with Hi I'm George Blanda NFL Hall Of Famer, and we shook hands. I replied, no way you're George Blanda!! Really? And walked away to handle business and when I returned he told me more of his story. I still wasn't sure what to think and was joking with them about it. When it came time for the bill, he handed me his credit card and we bout died laughing! Swiped the card in the kitchen and the crew burst out laughing and me and maybe a bit jealous because I just spent the best part of my evening talking with a Legend about his career! They were a very sweet couple. My condolences to Betty and the children and may you rest in peace.

George Blanda gave us [my father and me] season Bear tickets when they played @ Wrigley and again @ Soldiers Field, some 10 years of season tickets, [we also sat right next to his wife Betty@ Wrigley Field]. George also took me and my father [Harold Baker] to Black Hawk games, and he also treated us to dinners before those games. Oh let's not forget the personal invitations to training camps he participated in (Air Force Academy were the Houston Oilers practiced) where I met Charlie Tollar and Billy Cannon. George gave me an autographed football from the 1958 Bears for a Christmas present [I still have the football]. One last note: I hate to go on and on, not really, but after getting out of the regular Army, my father picks me up from the Midway airport and takes me to a George Blanda 'motivational' speech gathering he was giving in Chicago. I walk in, Blanda sees me and my dad, stops everything and announces that I have served my country. Blanda begins to applaud and then everyone else stands up and does the same. Unbelievable!! Thanks so much George for giving a ‘kid' the memories of a lifetime.

Was looking at some old papers last night and it brought back the memory of when I first met George Blanda. Freshmen year in college and his brother was my room mate in the dorm. Was standing in the room when Joe and Grrges wife walked in the room with Joe's things. Joe introduced George by saying this is my brother the football player. Didn't mean anything to me until I saw him play against the Browns in 1970. To the Blanda family thanks for the great memory.

Dear Blanda Family ~
I became hooked on football due to George Blanda ~ I couldn't believe the Monday Night Football announcers could talk about "old" players like George Blanda. I had to stay tuned to hear more about this "old" guy and became a Blanda fan...and Raider fan...for life. My kids laminated a Blanda football card that I wore on a long gold chain during the fall season. I got it out of my jewelry drawer and put it on again this week when my daughter called to share the news of his passing. I am a dedicated college and pro football fan thanks to George Blanda and all that he brought to the game especially as an Oakland Raider. THanks for all of the memories of great saved games, George Blanda...you could do it all and I loved watching you! Thank you Blanda Family for allowing folks across the country to share this time with you.

I have been a Raider fan since the age of 11. Forty-two years later I am still a huge Raider fan. My filing cabinet in my classroom is silver and black with Raider memorabilia adorning the top. I remember watching all of the great Raider games that George Blanda played in with my Dad. I am deeply saddened by his passing. My father took me to Canton, Ohio to the Football Hall of Fame. One of the highlights for me was seeing George Blanda's Raider jersey. In later years I always enjoyed when the cameras would pan to him in the Raider team box. George Blanda is and will always be one of the greats of the game. He will truly be missed!

My sincere sympathy on your loss of Mr. Blanda. You probably wouldn't remeber me, but I was that skinny 15 year old boy who used to bag and carry out your groceries at the Royal Blue Grocery store in LaGrange Park in 1956 and 57. I remember Mr Blanda coming in the store on many occasions wearing his number 16 Bears jacket. I'd alway position myself in the isle he was shopping and say hello and wish him well for Sunday's game. I followed his career until he retired. I'm always proud to say that I knew Geoge and Betty Blanda. I went on to a successful corporate career, retired and live with my wife of 47 years in Lake County, Il.
Please know that we shall your loss.

The year was 1972. The Raiders came to Green Bay and won. At the time i was tending bar at the Austin Straubel Airport.
I was quite pleased the Packers had been beaten. In walks the entire team clad in light beige blazers.
Mr. Blanda comes up to the bar and gives me a drink order for the entire team.
He came back a second time...and, i said: "the same order Mr. Blanda?". After the order was filled and the team proceeded to their flight; Mr. Blanda came up and gave me a $5 tip.
What a class gentleman and what a class team!
My sincere condolences to family and friends.

George Blanda was big in my house, as my daughter followed his career since she was 12. She wears his number and her favorite team was the raiders. While on vacation in the 70's we had to drive to see where he played in California, we are from NJ. She attented a black tie affair in DC just to see him and have her photo taking with him. To her he was the greatest, thanks for making her days while on the football field.

I wanted to send a message to the family of George Blanda. I live in Tennessee, my father, Joe Williams was George's roommate at Kentucky! My Dad has always talked about him. They weren't roommates long. My dad was there on a football scholarship and not long after he was there he was drafted into the service. My son's and my dad's grandsons were so amazed at his story of being his roommate. I hope this blog gets to his family and know that we have been thinking of his family at this most difficult time.
Please email me if this message is delivered to his family @ [email protected].

I grew up a hard-core Raider fan in Alameda County and when I was nine-years old I saw Blanda's greatest comeback, the win over the Browns. I'll never forget asking my dad if the old man could do it again just before he kicked the game winning field goal. The place went nuts and it was a great moment that I got to share with my dad.
My dad, a USF graduate, passed away a few months ago and I'm hoping he and George ran into each other yesterday.
