Erskine Roberts Obituary

Roberts, Erskine Ward Age 68, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2013. Mr. Roberts was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of Mary Ward, a teacher, and Erskine G. Roberts, an architectural engineer, and the grandson of Dr. Joseph H. Ward, appointed by President Warren G. Harding as the first African-American Medical Director of a Veterans Hospital in 1922, and Zelia L. Ward, a founder of the Colored Women's Club movement in Indianapolis in 1906. Roberts, a resident of Chicago, earned a Master of Arts degree from Grand Valley College in Michigan and taught writing in several business colleges in Chicago. Formerly in the US Air Force medic corps, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, a car enthusiast, a model car collector, and a member of the writers group at Chicago's historic Hall Branch Library. One of his essays was published in the Journal of Ordinary Thought. Roberts is survived by his children, Sonja, Erskine and Bonnie; several nieces and nephews; and by his sisters, Lillian Agbo and Dr. Alice J. Palmer, former Illinois State Senator.
