King, Barbara Ann Scott One of Canada's greatest international sports celebrities and former Olympic ice skating champion died Sunday, September 30, 2012. at the age of 84. Mrs. King, a native of Ottawa, Canada and longtime resident of Chicago, captured the heart and imagination of the post war world when, at the age of 19, she competed in the 1948 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland and won the Olympic Figure Skating Gold Medal. It was the first Olympics held following World War II and by besting 24 other contestants from 11 countries, she succeeded in bringing Canada its first Olympic skating title and became a national heroine in her native country. She was the first lady from North America to win an Olympic championship. Her popularity never ceased and to this day, Mrs. King is recognized throughout Canada as their greatest sports figure of all time. Her skating career began at the age of 6 and she became the youngest in the world to pass her gold medal test at the age of 10. At the age of 11, she was Junior Lady Champion of Canada and in four different years, she was the reigning Senior Lady Champion of Canada. She also held the titles of North American Champion, European Champion, and World Champion during the 1940's. Since her retirement from professional skating, during which time she starred in the Hollywood Ice Revue, Mrs. King had become an avid and accomplished horsewoman. She is survived by her husband, Thomas V. King. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Friday from the graveside in Bosque-Bello Cemetery with the Reverend J. Michael Bowhay, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 1030 Lake Park Dr., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034. Please share her life story at www.oxleyheard.com. OXLEY-HEARD FUNERAL DIRECTORS

Dearest Family of Barbara King,
We were so sad to hear of Barbara's passing and we offer our deepest sympathy. I know it is little consolation at this sad time, but it should be of some satisfaction to know that in her passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.
The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the love they've shared. Her absence here on earth has left much sorrow behind. If the outpouring of sympathy on her loss is any indication, which I know it is then you can proudly and confidently say that her life indeed was a life well lived.
Tom, I know you'll find peace and comfort in knowing that her loss is felt by all who knew and loved her.
In Sympathy,
Terri Floyd and Ron Ames

I would like to offer my sympathy to the family and friends of Barbara Ann Scott. A friend came across her obituary and forwarded it to me as she remembered the story of how I got my name. I never met Barbara, but I was named after her. My father was from Watertown, NY and he admired her skating, though he told me he never spoken to her. I'm not sure he ever told my mother why he wanted to name me Barbara Scott, but it worked out well as my mother's maiden name was also Scott, though no relation to Barbara. I read about Barbara in a book about skaters once and was pleased to see a photo of the lady I was named for. Barbara never knew she had touched a young man from Watertown in such a way that he would name his daughter after her. I hope she would have been pleased. I am proud to have her name.

Barbara, Our family feels a true loss. We grieve with your amazing husband. Makenzie is going to miss seeing you at church every week with her grandmother. You and your husband always dressed your very best and looking like a King and Queen. You will be missed so very much. You were so very famous but treated every person as if they were a close friend. You never acted as if you were above anyone else. You loved God and your husband so much. I know he misses you terribly as my family does. I feel honored just to have met you and I thank you for being so kind to my daughter. She loved seeing your gold medal, your outfits & the Barbara Ann Doll the most. We're still trying to find her a doll but they're hard to come by. We miss you Mrs. Barbara Ann.
Love, Mary Kay, Amanda & Makenzie
