Eugene McClory Obituary

McClory, Eugene J. 84, of Ft. Mitchell, Ky., passed away on May 3 at the University of Cincinnati Hospital after a short illness. Born April 26, 1929, in Chicago, he attended Quigley and St. Mary of the Lake seminaries and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese in 1954. He served at St. Raphael, St. James and St. Andrew parishes, and was the Vicar for Religious during the 1960s under John Cardinal Cody. David Franzone, a former secretary to Cody said, "Gene was the primary liaison between the cardinal and the various religious congregations. His steady and kindly demeanor had a calming influence as these congregations of men and women were incorporating the revisions called for by the Second Vatican Council." Mr. McClory resigned from the priesthood in 1971, and took the position of President of the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. In the 1980s he moved to Michigan City, Ind., and became the assistant director of the Center for Social Concerns at the University of Notre Dame. Fr. Don McNeil, retired director of the center, said Mr. McClory arrived at a "critical time" for the center and was especially helpful in the areas of communication and business. McNeil added he appreciated "Gene's temperamental balance and his ability to realize just how much the center could do." Jim Fisko, a longtime friend and former executive director of the United Religious Communities of St. Joseph County, said, "Gene was dedicated to family and friends, and wherever he worked, I think, was a kind of ministry for him." Fisko also cited Mr. McClory's willingness to listen and give advice. "I felt like I could always call on him and share concerns or needs." Later, Mr. McClory moved to the Cincinnati area, working as coordinator for the Caregiver Assistance Network of Catholic Social Services of Southwestern, Ohio, where he launched dozens of caregiver support groups. Rod Huber, former director of family services for Catholic Charities of Southwest Ohio, called Mr. McClory "one of the most gentle persons I ever met." He related so well with people, said Huber, noting that the growth of caregiver groups was due largely to his "marvelous work." Mr. McClory was married in 1971 to Mary Malone, with whom he had one daughter, Catherine. He was predeceased by his wife Mary in 1985, and his younger brother Edward in 1994. He is survived by his daughter Catherine (Michael Diedrich) and two granddaughters, Kira and Tessa, as well as his brother, Robert (Margaret). He is also survived by his wife, Mary Coleman. A wake for Mr. McClory will be held at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Ind. on Wednesday, May 8, from 4-8 p.m. On Thursday, May 9, there will be visitation from 9-11 a.m. at St. Ann of the Dunes Church, 433 E. Golfwood Rd. Beverly Shores, Ind. Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mary McClory Memorial Scholarship at the Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work.

Not sure what to say?

So sorry to hear the news! I learned about Gene's many accomplishments in life after seeing a note from his brother and my friend Bob McClory. Now I know why Bob looked up to his big brother. Gene led a life of service in and out of the priesthood in the best spirit of the Catholic Church. God rest his soul.

As a member of the Chicago presbyterate, I am grateful to Gene for his 17 years of priestly ministry during critical years surrounding Vatican II. He and his colleagues blazed a trail for the post-conciliar church. My sincere condolences to all the McClorys
