Gerald Freudenburg Obituary

Lutheran pastor who loved serving God, helping families

PEORIA - The Rev. Gerald V. Freudenburg, 76, of Peoria died at 12:55 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at his residence.

Born Nov. 28, 1933, in Wichita, Kan., a son of Benjamin F. and Viola M. Telschow Freudenburg, he married Joan Rodekohr on Aug. 18, 1957, in Battle Creek, Neb. She survives.

Also surviving are five children, Jean (Steve) Blank of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Beth (Dave) Bray of Madison, Wis., Cheryl (Craig) Griebel of Peoria, Kathy (Tim) Dibadj of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Gerald Paul Freudenburg of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Ann Stewart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Margaret (Walter) Schrieber of St. Louis, Mo., and Dorothy (Rick) Gove of Belleville, Ill.; and one brother, Ben (Jennifer) Freudenburg of Ann Arbor, Mich.

He was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed.

Gerald was a graduate of Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb., and Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Mo.

Ordained into the holy ministry in 1957, he touched the lives of many people as a pastor of Lutheran congregations in Edinburg and Rochester, Ill., and Grand Island, Neb.

From 1970 to 1995, he served as senior pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Peoria. While serving at Trinity in Peoria, he established the Stephen Ministry program, the WATCH program, premarital workshops, marriage enrichment workshops, as well as the staff positions of Cantor and Director of Christian Education.

His ministry and life message was "TGLTYTY," which means to "Trust God's Love to You and Through You."

He served the church at-large as a member of the Concordia School Board, the Lutheran Hillside Village Board and the Central Illinois Board of directors.

He was certified as a pastoral counselor in May 1994, by the Illinois Pastoral Institute.

In addition to preaching in many area churches after retirement, he served in the area of family ministry at Christ Lutheran Church in Peoria for one year and as a vacancy pastor at both Faith Lutheran Church in Lincoln and St. John's Lutheran Church in Green Valley.

His passion for helping marriages and families was evident in his continued ministry of pre-marital and marriage enrichment workshops and the Five for the Family program he developed. These ministries were used by a number of congregations in the Peoria and St. Louis areas.

For the past eight years, he served as a part-time chaplain at Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria. Until recently, he continued serving the ministry of Trinity Lutheran Church in Peoria by visiting homebound members.

Services celebrating the life of Pastor Freudenburg will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Peoria. Dr. David Peter and Pastor Mark Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Peoria. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Wilton Mortuary in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.

Dear Freudenburg Family,
We wish to extend our condolences to the family and say that he held a special place in our hearts as a wonderful Pastor and mentor. He confirmed both of us and performed our marriage, too. We will never forget his advice during pre-marriage counseling. Your family is in our prayers.

Dear Joan & Family,
We met Pastor Fruedenberg as he served as a vacancy pastor for our church, then on a more personal level as Brian and I attended an engagement encounter which he and Joan hosted at their home. We are blessed to have met him and always hold a special place in our hearts for him. We pray that the Lord will be with you during this time. He was a wonderful man. We will always remember the engagement encounter. God Bless your family.

Dear Jo and Family and Ben and Jennifer, From Battle Creek to Peoria to Phoenix, how our paths have crossed in so many ways throughout Pastor Jerry's and Ben's lifetimes. Dear Jo and family,
Even as we anticipate a glorious heavenly reunion when we join Gerry in heaven, we mourn his passing and the void it leaves in so many lives. He was a marvelous mentor for us when we were at St. Paul's, Decatur and the blessing continued when we moved to Peoria. May you feel the arms of Jesus around you as you grieve, yet not without hope. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. God bless and comfort you!

Dear Freudenburg Family,
Through the years I have thought about your family often. Although it has been years, your family has had a special place in my heart and I pray for you now.
I know all of the kids are now grown and have families of their own, but I will always remember them as they were when I babysat them in your house across the street from ours.
I now have four children and three and a half grandchildren of my own and live just outside of Lincoln. Please know that Gerry will be missed and I pray that you find comfort in your church and with each other.
Love always, Barbara Sharp Watton

What an amazing life Pastor led! What a blessing he was to all of us! His sermons touched, taught and guided me throughout my childhood and his uplifting blessing at our wedding was a joyous and wonderful highlight-a wonderful example of the joy, peace and hope Pastor always brought to others. TGLTYTY has been a constant source of strength and peace to me throughout the years-what a wonderful example by living and what a wonderful legacy which continues through his wife and family! My prayers and thoughts are with Mrs. Freudenburg and family; that you may gain strength and comfort in the knowledge that Pastor has gained the victory that God grants us all in Christ Jesus and that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

While Heaven rejoices, our hearts are deeply saddened with the passing of our beloved Pastor. His love for Christ was evident with his unique messages which at times included personal trials and tribulations. The path always seemed clearer and the load a little lighter after his sermon. Moving here from Galesburg, he was the reason we joined Trinity and when he retired, well, lets just say he was irreplaceable in our hearts. My children looked forward to his big loving (lift your feet off the ground) hugs they would receive after service along with his big warm smile. He left many imprints on each of our hearts. May his family receive comfort in the knowledge that 'TGLTYTY' changed many lives. He was my son's Mentor during Confirmation and he Baptized both Jeff and Carly. We will miss him so!

Our children went to Concordia grade school and how thankful we are for their education there. I remember the tigletyty illustration vividly and appreciated the attention given to each child. The last time we saw him he was giving devotions at the Lutheran Home where my aunt was a patient. What a blessing he was to this family!

We will be eternally grateful to Pastor Freudenburg and Joan for all the loving support when our daughter was born with Spina Bifida.
